"Sat in the Afterimage"

(Voice flat. Close. Possibly transmitted from inside fluorescent wiring.)

I was here before the light.
No—that’s wrong.
The light was here before me.
It keeps saying my name but not in the right order. The letters slide. Rearrange. Sometimes I’m someone else entirely.
There’s a girl across from me.
She has my face but it’s smoother, like it hasn’t been used yet. She eats slowly. She doesn’t swallow. I don’t think she has to.
When I blink, she stays.
When she blinks, I skip.
There’s a hum in the ceiling. It’s not mechanical. It’s conversational. It’s asking whether I’d like to trade places.
I try to stand but the booth has memorized my shape. My legs feel photocopied. My hands leave faint duplicates on the table.
Someone walks past the window.
No—someone walks inside the window.
The sky outside is thin. If I press hard enough I think I could tear through it and find the room again, smaller, repeating, repeating, repeating.
I was told this was lunch.
But nothing is being consumed.
Something is feeding.
And it isn’t hungry for food.

Week 4: Monochrome Magic

I am so late on this one, I had every intention of getting a ton of art done while traveling over Thanksgiving visiting family, however you can probably guess how that plan turned out. Even though it is late, I loved my sketch for this prompt - everything pink - so I had to finish it up.

I hope everyone who celebrated Thanksgiving had a lovely time and had some time at least to relax. Now time for the winter holiday rush and all the wonderful winter challenges!
