POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A few moments from Darat, by House of Gongs that brings Filipino history, culture and Indigenous traditions to life through music, dance, fashion and storytelling.

There is so much beauty in this production, but also a painful history beneath it. Set against the legacy of the Sakadas who came to Hawaiʻi to work on the sugar plantations, Darat explores what generations of Filipinos have carried, preserved and passed down.

A little behind the scenes: performances by the incredible dancers and musicians, fashion by Elle Karayan, and spoken word by Brian Adrias. Music for this reel by Lotus Sky.

Not pictured: my panel, What We Carry, with Sakada descendants Ashton Obrera and Chef Eric Pascual, whose perspectives on family, identity and cultural inheritance added another dimension to the experience. I’ll follow up with that later.

I've learned and grown so much in these 4 years.
None of this would have been possible without my awesome friends, mentors, family, pushing me to be courageous and kind to myself.

Banua Katao (“People of the Village”) is the newest performing arts project by House of Gongs, developed through the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Dancing in the Diaspora initiative. The project’s name reflects shared Austronesian roots—linking the canoe (wa’a), the land (fenua), and the village (banua)—to evoke a deep sense of community and ancestral belonging.

Led by Lydia Querian @msellekarayan and musical directors Kevin Kalamayan (@kebin_calamansi) and Ron Querian (@kulintronica) , the ensemble blends contemporary dance, martial arts, and Filipino Indigenous movement. Their work explores the deep connections between the Philippines and the broader Austronesian world, tracing shared rhythms and gestures across the Pacific.

At UNI: Rhythms of Indigenous Philippines, Banua Katao presents a language of expression that honors tradition while centering the living pulse of diasporic identity and cultural continuity, an offering this #AAIPHN.

✨Maraming salamat to @cassieordonio and @wearehpr for featuring Indigo Child!(full story at link in bio)✨

We are proud to bring to the stage a story that highlights mental health and recovering from trauma. On watching opening night, Filipina therapist Jessica Bonds @unfurl.here reflects: “Mental health portrayed in Indigo Child was the epitome of Western ideology on how PTSD, anxiety, and depression were treated - what we now know about mental health through a diasporic lens is the importance of the integration of one’s personal Indigenous culture and roots for recovery. To go back into nature and heal with community is a truer path.”

💜ALL SHOWS ARE SOLD OUT💜
Thank you for your support!
