picture it: October 2014, Pittsburgh. it’d been 6 months since I moved from Harlem, NY to western PA. besides my family (my mom is from PGH and moved back when I was in college) + a couple friends I met through my cousin Damon, I didn’t know anyone. I had 2 young kiddos and spent most of my time doin parent stuff, freelancing as a graphic designer & creative director, traveling, and missing my friends, my ‘hood, and my old life.

but when October started approaching I began asking around about Halloween parties and the nightlife scene, preferably for Black queer people. where I ended up was definitely Black AF, which I liked cause the music was good and everybody was moisturized, but it was also a very hetero environment. still I made the best of it cuz Halloween is my favorite holiday, my moon is in Scorpio, and I was tired of not having a social life. this is a photo from that night (I was a wind-up doll lol).

it would be another year before I found Images (RIP) and 2 years until Ace Hotel PGH (RIP) & Hot Mass entered my life. but the seed was planted. I needed to either find a far more intersectional Black nightlife scene or create it. I started @mostbeautifullest in 2017 by throwing my own Halloween party, of course. so this is the season that pushed me to build a life in this city, and that was based purely on what I needed for ME.

lately I’ve been goin all the way through it emotionally with nightlife. it can be extremely draining, it’s not always financially stable, there’s a lot of struggle, disrespect, and heartbreak coupled being a Black queer woman in this industry, and so many other things. but 12 years after this photo, what I was inspired to build for myself is now for the benefit of so many others. that still feels mad special. and necessary.

Spooky season is finally upon us and since The MoB was born in October, this is our *real* time to shine. For the past 2 years the Halloween edition of SZR Club Night has been masquerade-themed, but year 3 calls for something a bit more…ravenous. ✂️😈

On Oct 16, from 6-11pm, the SZR masquerade ball returns with a vampiric twist. We want to see your most blood-thirsty lewks, we want to fulfill your darkest desires, and we plan to devour as only sapphics can. Catch that. 👅

Happy anniversary, Mama Bear!! 11 years married, 15 together. Marriage is hard, no doubt about that, but life itself is so much harder. Having a person you can truly count on to help navigate all of the ups and downs is a rare privilege and I am so lucky that you’ve chosen to share your life with me. Being married to a restaurateur/chef is about the worst possible path for a wife and yet you manage to pull it off with grace. You’re my favorite travel partner, dinner companion, animal lover, fashionista, wine drinker, explorer. And most importantly, my best friend. The journey hasn’t always been straightforward but we’ve navigated it together. I love you, my dove. Here’s to us! 🥂😘

Arise! It’s time for the third-annual In Dead by Ten Halloween Dance Party, presented by Hidden Harbor, THIS IS RED, and In Bed by Ten, returning on Saturday, October 17 to the stunning, century-old former Slovakian Catholic church that serves as THIS IS RED’s home base and event space in Munhall. Tickets are on sale NOW!

This year’s edition takes on a Heaven & Hell theme, with two levels of DJ’s offering two different dance experiences. Upstairs in the main hall “Pop Heaven,” Slim tha DJ and DJ MB will take you higher, while downstairs in the Disco Dungeon, DJ’s EZ Lou, Buscrates, and Formosa will light a fire under your feet.

Pay a visit to the Tarot Grotto with Tenorina for a frightfully good reading. And don’t forget the costume contest, now with a dance line at 9 p.m. to show off your moves with prizes for Best Group Costume, Best Presentation, and Most Creative. Be an angel, a devil, or both!
