Thank you for being on this journey with us. For all the customers, farmers, and fellow food makers who have become friends—and for all the sweet memories we’ve made over the years… y’all really are the best.

Okay now I need to stop myself before I get too emo!! Anyways if you’re in town I hope to see ya at the markets this weekend!! Love ya lots!!

On Monday, we looked out our window and saw that the noodle factory where we manufacture @umiorganic noodles was on fire. Black smoke was billowing thickly into the sky. We learned no one was injured. It wasn’t a day when our noodles are made, but we still know and care about the people there. Stunned is a mild word for the feeling. It felt like having some part of my being ripped out. But the relief I felt that no one was hurt cannot be measured. I couldn’t stop thinking about the Mercado fire. About Matt Choi who was such a beautiful human gone too soon. About Gaza and the different scales of sadness and tragedy. I felt fortunate even as I felt horrified.

On Wednesday I shared the news publicly, which was intensely emotional. And then that night I came home to a package from my publisher. My finished books had arrived. I was too overwhelmed to open them. I don’t think I could have handled that piling up of emotions. Instead I cooked lentils and had Corey tell me about the NBA draft.

This morning I awoke to a full house. A group of my dearest people was gathering in my kitchen for bagels before they headed to Enchanted Forest for a day away. I wanted to open the books surrounded by all of these loved ones. And I did. 😭

I feel proud of this book. I feel amazed that I get to work with @joeymcgarvey and @spiegelandgrau . I feel unsure how to celebrate this in the face of so much loss but also I want to.

People have gone above and beyond to offer us help. We haven’t figured out how to accept yet. So much still remains unknown. But for this moment I just want to share this news: Here is Group Living and Other Recipes! Coming to you in August. Soon, let’s party together—and sit with all of the heavy and sweet and unimaginable things. That will mean so much to me!

I celebrated my 42nd bday 3 times last week.

1 was some personal time with @markuponyourpermanentrecords and @sleepytut, where we ingested cactus consciousness 🌵🌀, and I’ll leave it at that.

On Wednesday, @_maddchill organized a Taurus themed night at @swiftloungepdx.

And on Sunday, my pal @rythmatix, went through the trouble of organizing a backyard BBQ for me, and it was so much fun.

Don’t have pics of everyone but know that I really appreciate you all coming through and supporting.

I have a beautiful base of friends here in Portland, Oregon, and this guy is seriously grateful for y’all.

I had a wonderful time at the markets this weekend! Got my mom to pinch hit and work on Saturday at Hollywood, and then lo and behold there was Lori of @hotmamasalsa in our Umi noodle sweatshirt at King on Sunday (plus Elan @temptresstruffles finally had lots of mushrooms because the rains have come!)

And Friday night was pure mind-expanding magic at the Sagra de Radicchio! Slide 4 is Jason of @localrootsfarmstore (where you can get our noodles!) who with his wife Siri founded the first radicchio celebration in the region, and look at it now! @culinarybreedingnetwork adding her singular touch and bringing so many people together to bask in the wonder of radicchio and so much more! Follow all those people because they literally change what we eat, what farmers grow, how we understand our food culture, and what our future can be!!

🍃🍃🍃What a weekend at farmers’ markets! I’m definitely cold and it’s going to take some time to re-adjust to the fall weather 😫 The weather hits my soul exactly the same every year.

Last weekend though my friend Lori @lori_lorison hit @akadipdx for the first time and we had a blast. If you haven’t eaten there, add Akadi to your list because the food is just amazing. Yum yum yum! I am going to find an excuse to go back each time I have the opportunity. Check them out for your exposure to an array of dishes from various African countries!🌿🌿 you can think me after😄 Watching @lori_lorison swallowing pieces of tonmtonm aka fufu like a pro from her plate and dissecting a whole fried fish like we do in the island made me so happy. She did it with the widest smile on her face. Thanks, Lori for everything !

My friend @victorwillisfood contacted me this summer with an idea to collaborate on a sauce using his shropshire damson plums. He said “My Auntie Pat lived in Bournemouth in S.England and had many damson trees in her backyard. I loved to pick em and eat the damson jam she made. Damsons are tart when raw but surrender a deep luscious texture and perfume flavor on cooking with sugar. In England you can find them in woodlands or sometimes riverbanks. As soon as I had a garden in the U.S I knew I wanted to plan a shropshire damson tree.” How could I say no? The damson plums are like little Barbie plums and have a very rich complex flavor. I made one sauce based on our fresh plum chipotle salsa and one inspired by Chinese duck sauce. We all did some tasting and in the end the plum chipotle with some ginger and canela won out. It’s rich, delicious, and spicy and it’s ready for you! We will have it this weekend @hollywoodfarmersmarketpdx @portlandfarmers PSU & King and @milwaukiefarmersmarket 50% of sales will go to @pcunoregon to aid migrant farm workers.
