Honored to have attended today’s reception celebrating the 200th anniversary of the historic Palais de justice and L'Orignal Old Jail, and the 175th anniversary of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell. This iconic building is central to our heritage.

The event brought together dignitaries for the unveiling of a plaque and the launch of Derrière les murs / Behind the Walls, an exhibit sharing the fascinating history of the site. A great opportunity to celebrate our community and strengthen our bonds.

I was pleased to attend alongside MPP Stéphane Sarrazin; Mayor Robert Lefebvre (Town of Hawkesbury); Mayor Mike Tarnowski(Russell Township ); Mayor Mario Zanth (City of Clarence-Rockland); and Mayor Normand Riopel (Township of Champlain).

I am grateful to have honored the past alongside fellow residents and leaders. Heritage like this reminds us of our roots and inspires our future.

I had the opportunity to take a tour of the L'Orignal Old Jail - one of Ontario’s oldest historic sites. 🏛️

Thank you to the staff and guides for sharing the stories and history behind this unique landmark. It was a fascinating look into our region’s past and the people who shaped it.

During our visit, we had the pleasure of meeting with members of the team behind the site’s ongoing preservation and programming: Emma Calvert, Coordonnatrice; Louise Bédard Présidente; Helen MacLeod, Trésorière; and Robert Prévost, Vice-président.

This summer, the old jail also welcomed four enthusiastic guides as part of the Young Canada Works program: a great initiative supporting youth employment and heritage education.

The team is always looking for passionate volunteers to help keep this important piece of local history alive - a great way to get involved in the community and make a difference.

If you’re ever in the area, it’s well worth a visit!
