📚🎉🚀FEB 10: @ADFRNTBooklist & @lorimerkids present the launch of ACE AND THE MISFITS, by Ugandan Canadian writer Eddie Kawooya, 2pm at the @blackhurstcc.

Eddie, joined by fellow author Kevin HeronJones, will discuss his debut #YAnovel, in which main character Ace, new to Canada, struggles to overcome bullying and to adapt to a new culture. It's a fish-out-of-water story of immigration and the pains and joys of integration into a new and sometimes frightening environment.

Youth who are new to the country or who are in a position to interact with immigrants in their schools and neighbourhoods are likely to find that ACE AND THE MISFITS resonates with them and helps them to understand this society better.

More on the book and to order a copy of ACE AND THE MISFITS from @afrntbooklist: https://www.adifferentbooklist.com/?q=h.tviewer&using_sb=status&qsb=keyword&qse=ifabLUcZKdKtPBafTPpr-A (Link in bio.)

Presentation will include an interview with the author, a live reading, a Q&A, and book signing. Light refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public.

Reposting from my Tiktok - someone asked how I got into writing and the truth is, it started out of a deep sense of difference and a need to be understood 📚❤️

Ps.

Big thanks goes out to the Hackmatack Children's Choice Book Awards for nominating my first youth novel Half-Court Trap for the Award in literary fiction.

A great honour especially since the awards are voted by youth readers.

When I decided to write a youth novel it was meant to attract reluctant readers to literature about subjects they enjoy. As a kid I hated reading but loved sports. It wasn't until I found a novel about sports that I began a love of reading. It also helped that the book cover had a Black youth on it. Someone I could identify with.

I wanted to do that same thing for young athletes today

Special thanks to Oriana Duinker, Ray Fernandez and all the Hackmatack staff for organizing an amazing event in Charlottetown, PEI !!

As #PrideMonth continues, I'm excited to share an update from Olympic skater Eric Radford. Here's what Eric has accomplished in his own words: "The biggest thing that happened in the last 2 years would be that I decided to make a comeback, went to my third Olympics and won another World bronze medal with a new skating partner, Vanessa James." Congratulations @ericradford and Happy Pride everyone! #oneteam #youcanplay

In honour of Pride Month 2023, I was excited to check in with some of the inspirational athletes I interviewed in Proud to Play: LGBTQ+ athletes who made history. Here is what rhythmic gymnast Rosie Cossar has been up to in the last 2 years: Rosie is now an EMT and loves her job. She and Emma were married in 2022. Now they are 9 months pregnant with their first child. Congrats and Happy Pride!!!

As the Native Women's Association of Canada, we know that the loss of one woman is felt by the entire community.

📖 Brianna Jonnie's graphic novel, "If I Go Missing," speaks to the heartache and pain that Indigenous families experience.

🎨 Artist Neal Shannacappo's illustrations imagine a scenario where a young Indigenous woman disappears.

💡 It includes an author's note providing crucial context about the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls crisis in Canada.

We will continue to fight for justice and for the safety of Indigenous women and girls everywhere.

Read Brianna Jonnie’s graphic novel.
