We needed a reflection. What we actually needed was a nurse.

One of our favorite shots puts Eva's face as a reflection inside Don's hospital room. The luminance fought us the whole way, until we improvised: a nurse went in, pretended to stock shelves, and her body created the perfect area for Eva's face to appear.

Sometimes the fix for an optics problem isn't a light. It's blocking.

How do you perform the worst place a person could ever be?

One moment at a time, one scene at a time. The performer at the center of our void scene described imagining everything the monsters would do to him, not just now, but forever. That word is what makes the scene land.

The darkest performances are built one honest moment at a time.

On this set, two actors played two parts that thread through the entire story. But the stage in Mexico was one node in something bigger: crews all around the world, all feeding the same edit.

Scale is not the size of your set. It is how many people you can trust with the same vision.

"For safety reasons they had to cut out the engine of the car before we could actually wreck it."

We wanted the crash to be real: two identical cars, one for picture, one to destroy. But practical never means reckless. Before that car could be wrecked, the engine came out entirely. You see half a second of impact. You never see the surgery that made it safe.

The more real you want the danger to look, the less real the danger has to be.

"It's like going on a tunnel."

That is the bridge from Don Piper's 1989 accident: metal superstructure above you, steel on both sides, sky closed off. For After Death we rebuilt it from the real accident photos and scans, because a crash inside a steel corridor reads completely differently than one on an open road.

Study the architecture of the real event. The location is a character.
