Join us THIS Thursday, (doors at 6pm, talk begins at 6:30-)
for this dynamic talk with Joseph Ferraro and Rick Lieder as they take you through a tour of the exhibit highlighting their artistic practice and answering questions!

Joseph Ferraro is a conservation macro photographer walking the naturalist's path, based in Ferndale, Michigan. His yard, planted with native species, doubles as his field studio, and is where the journey began. Working by a "do no harm" credo, he photographs portraits of insects and pollinators as they are in their environment: native bees, ambush bugs, jumping spiders, and the countless other tiny creatures most people walk past without a second glance. Shortlisted for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year 61 People's Choice Award, his work asks viewers to look more closely at the intricate world around them, one that doesn't require a plane ticket, just patience.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year, People's Choice Nominee (WPY61), selected from more than 60,000 entries from photographers across over 110 countries, placing it among the 24 photographs shortlisted for the global public vote, and included in the competition's highlights book.

Featured in BBC, PetaPixel, The Guardian, Smithsonian Magazine, Axios Detroit, and Country Life UK, among others.

Rick Lieder is a photographer and painter whose work has been shown in art and zoological galleries in the Midwest and Canada, featured on PBS, and anchors an award-winning series of picture books.
He lives and works in urban nature, surrounded by trees, bees, and birds."

"The pictures are beautiful, and I think they capture an important aspect of reality."
- Vernor Vinge

Prints on wood statement

Each work begins as a photographic image, printed with archival ink directly onto a panel of Baltic birch that I prepare myself, then set into a frame of my own construction. Because the process is done entirely by hand, no two pieces emerge exactly alike; small variations in registration, ink coverage, and surface coating give every print its own individual character. The birch adds a further layer of singularity, as the grain running beneath each image is unique to that panel, so the wood becomes an active part of the composition rather than a neutral support. Each panel is finished with an archival varnish for protection and longevity. The result sits closer to a monoprint than a reproduction: even when two panels are drawn from the same source image, each exists as a one-of-one object.
