This is not a post to talk about how it’s 80 degrees here and 30 back home. It’s a post about @lotsofpulp birthday. Definitely not the nice weather. Though it is 80 degrees but it’s not about that. We didn’t come here to escape the 39 inches of snow, though it had been nice not having to worry about if sidewalks were clear. Happy birthday Luis! Love you #80Degrees

As we continue to celebrate @chibiconshow ‘s 10 year anniversary. I (Tito) figured I shared a bit of history and how it all started. (Short version)

2011-2013

The mix of Drag and Cosplay was something not well perceived, at least not in western mass or surrounding areas. Conventions did not want to have drag at all. And locally, host of venues did not want to have cosplay at the drag shows. We got many nasty comments that we can’t put here. We also got some not as nasty such as “leave cosplay for kids birthday parties, not adults show”. We STRUGGLED doing cosplay at drag events or drag at cosplay events. Mixing our two passions was impossible (at the time) so we kept them separate.

2014

We got the opportunity to host our own events at the LEGENDARY @divasnightclub . My focus was on 2 types of events that reflected who I am: A) Queer Latinx nights (which were non existent in Western Mass) and B) Nerd/Geek nights (which were also super non existent). The ONLY other place to see queer nerd acts was at @bonappetitburlesque . The Latinx was well received but the cosplay not as much. At the end of 2014 we decided to make a statement and go full blown cosplay. Since conventions wouldn’t have us; Serenity and I thought of bringing the convention to us. We wanted the feeling of a smaller convention to be local and also mixed with drag. That’s when we came up with “Serenity’s Chibi-Con Cosplay Nights”. (Chibi because that’s small in Japanese) A monthly themed event where we had drag artist do cosplay, different DJ’s doing nerdy music, costume contest, geeky merch and more.

2015

January 31st, 2015 we debuted our event. Our first event was “Superheroes” themed and it was a HUGE success. We were in tears that night, because after all the hard work, it was the first time Serenity and myself felt acknowledged and recognized for our mix of drag and cosplay. This is a night I will never ever forget.

Our themes that year were:

Superheroes, Super Mario, Furries (I can’t find the flyer), Villains, Pokemon, Anime, Dragonball Z, Darkstalkers, Arcade (Same cast as 2025 CTCon!!!) and Tim Burton.

We have worked with such incredible and ICONIC performers!

To be continued…
