100 MILE REGENT’S PARK KOM.

I’d been doing some longer efforts around Regent’s Park recently 2–3 hours at a time and they’d been a great introduction to my training.

Then, completely randomly, on Thursday I had a harebrained idea.

I wonder if I could take the 100 mile KOM?

The numbers

The first two hours were completely solo, with a bit of help from the boys, mainly @gdavoo through the final two hours before going it alone again for the last 30 minutes.

So while it wasn’t 100 miles completely solo, the majority of the effort was about holding the pace yourself and making the legs last.

I knew this one was going to be different to a lot of the other KOMs around the park.

The really fast laps can be heavily influenced by big groups, drafting and having a few people driving the pace.

This one felt like something I could actually have a proper go at on my own for the most part, so nutrition was going to be important too.

The plan was pretty simple:

Get good legs.
Get the pacing right.
Keep it controlled early.
Fuel properly.
And see how long I could hold it together.

There’s something about riding the same loop over and over that makes an effort increasingly physical and increasingly mental.

The longer it went, the more it became about not backing off.

The legs were hurting, the concentration was fading, but the clock was still looking good.

With about an hour to go, I somehow managed to drop a water bottle which, at that point, felt like a fairly catastrophic error.

Thankfully, Louis, Tomas, Mario and Kel all came to the rescue, acting as my personal domestiques and handing me their spare bottles. A sign of just how special the london cycling scene is, mates just showed up no questions asked.

By the end I was absolutely cooked.

I eventually crawled into Rapha Donna, where Captain Tom and Stephen Moon were there to greet me — with Stephen kindly rehydrating me from the Rapha fridges in triumph.

Couldn’t have scripted it better.

A completely harebrained idea on Thursday turned into one of the hardest and most satisfying efforts I’ve done.
