The things they did for art! Louis Kasmin has curated a brilliant show of early Hockney … the first image shows his grandfather, the original KAS, posing for the young artist he was promoting. Hockney not only uses this pose but in another drawing hangs a ‘for sale’ sign round his friend’s neck… the love between artists and gallerists. They just can’t live without each other.

Curated by @louiskasmin with guidance from #johnkasmin @kasminspostcards & @marcolivingstone

Exhibited together for the first time, these early paintings embellished with love hearts, graphic text, suggestive shapes and depictions of friends and lovers reveal #DavidHockney ‘s precocious talent during the most formative chapter of his career. In The Mood For Love: Hockney in London 1960-1963 brings together some of the great artist’s earliest works, made while he was still a student at the #RoyalCollegeofArt up until he left for America. The sun-drenched colours of California would come later.

The ‘love paintings’, around which this exhibition is centred, are candid expressions of desired sexual liberation within a bold visual language that is marked by emotional intensity and abstract compositions.

These early paintings rich in narrative and psychological complexity laid the foundation for Hockney’s lifelong exploration of identity, desire, and the human figure and established many of the themes that continue to animate his work today.

Going through my mother’s old photo’s tonight. Many reflect an intimate, up close record of the pivotal moments, people and events that transformed British art into the international mainstream.
