What I liked about FIVE VOICES:
* Firstly, I was absolutely hooked by the premise of this story (Five Voices is a hugely popular podcast where five friends debate contentious issues while playing classic board games. After one particularly vicious argument, one of them ends up dead.) and immediately connected it to two of my fave YA Thriller writers, E Lockhart and Karen M. McManus.
* Secondly, with a vast cast (Rosie, William, Simone. Zac and Ocean), teens will definitely find a character to align themselves with, regardless of the characters’s true motivations.
* Thirdly, the fast-paced and high stakes nature of the narrative will also keep teen readers engrossed, especially as more and more secrets are unravelled, and we discover that not everything is black and white.
* Finally, and please keep in mind that I am not the intended audience, I found the sense of voice a bit… much and not enough at the same time. I would have put this one down, if not for the utterly compelling plot.

“Science Experiment”
This is a short story I spent several weeks working on, kinda off and on in between other things. I did the final polish and submission in a cafe at Brisbane Airport while waiting for a flight to Longreach for STORYFEST OUT WEST ( @somersetstoryfest ). And I got the acceptance email a couple of days ago for a new MG/YA anthology.
I am so pleased! I’m happy that this weird sci-fi story wasn’t too weird for the editor. [In the past I’ve had stories rejected for being too weird.] It’s got alternative realities, zombies, cybernetic Rottweilers, a mad scientist, a mystical stone circle and a heap of other things. 😁 Happy!

‘Which book did you most enjoy writing?’ is a question that comes up a lot in live talks. I usually say that I have loved and hated writing all the books. ‘Hated’ is a strong word But I love it when I’m in flow, moving forward, discovering new things, totally immersed in the story. Even after writing 20 or so books, though, I genuinely struggle and feel lost and helpless when I can’t crack the code on a story. Which is often.

Writing ‘Raised By Wolves’, returning to the universe of ‘Two Wolves’ but five story-years later and from a different character’s POV, I think, was my most enjoyable writing experience. I wrote it at a difficult time, personally, when I lost my dad, so the writing felt like a retreat, a place to go where I could try to make sense of things and express ideas. Writing has saved me in this way over and over again.

I, actually, have such good memories of writing both of these books. A lot of the pain in the process is forgotten when the story finally makes sense.

🌸 SEPTEMBER HOPEFULS 🌸

Seven books but hoping to fit in a few more.

YA choice - SENSITIVE by Allayne Webster @allaynewebster After reading Maisy Hayes isn’t For Sale by Allayne, I was keen to choose another from her catalogue.

Translation - THE SECOND CHANCE CONVENIENCE STORE by Kim Ho-Yeon I bought this for my daughter and borrowed it back after I realised I love these Asian translated books too

MG choice - LIGHTNING MARY by Anthea Simmons Historical novel (my fave) about Mary Anning, fossil hunter and scientist. I can’t wait to read this one.

Audiobook - ANNE OF THE ISLAND by LM Montgomery. This was meant to be my wrapped-book-a-month for August but I just didn’t get to it, so I found it on Libby as an audiobook. It’s the third in the Anne of Green Gables series.

Recommended - YOU ARE FATALLY INVITED by Ande Pliego. This book comes highly recommended by Janae of @factsorfacades fame. I hope she hasn’t steered me wrong with this murder mystery. 😉 if you’re not following her account yet, what are you waiting for?

September Wrapped book - THE IVORY ROSE by Belinda Murrell @belinda_murrell My wrapped-book-a-month for September is a middle grade timeslip tale by an Australian author, win/win/win for me. And there looks to be a whole series with a similar theme, woohoo!

Memoir - MAKING IT SO by Patrick Stewart (aka Capt Picard) Continuing trying to read a memoir a month, this month’s choice is by one of my favourite actors. Fell in love with him in Star Trek the Next Generation, so I’m very keen to read his life’s story.

BOOK WEEK 📕🎤 Kicked off @cbca_vic #bookweek at Simonds Catholics College today with a presso on How I Write my Books and why Aussie YA crime books are awesome to all Year 7 (thanks for the brilliant questions). Followed this with a Write Your Own Crime Story workshop with a cool year 8 group (some brutal crimes were dreamed up)! 🔫🔪☠️📕

What I loved about A NEW KIND OF BEAUTIFUL:
* Firstly, how powerful is it to see the full arc of Paige’s diagnosis - from the uncertainty, to the grieving (especially the anger), navigating friendships and relationships, and finally, acceptance. Zail does not shy away from giving her teen readers a real sense of Paige’s altering world, and I think this is a credit to her empathy and prose.
* Secondly, Paige, as our protagonist, is someone who I think will stay with readers, long after the final page. She is raw, and angry, and defiant, and scared, and loves, and cares. She has been thrust into a world of pre and post Stargardt’s diagnosis, and with her vision dwindling, she is trying to conceive a world where she cannot see.
* Thirdly, I quite enjoyed seeing the ups and downs of Paige’s relationships, especially the one with her parents and the one with Zac. I think it is clever to show us the ins and outs of both, without glossing over the ugly bits.
* Finally, I adore stories that infuse hope by showing resilience and adaptability. What great skills for teens!
