A bronze statue of Ismail Kadare stands in one of his favorite spots—where he used to drink his coffee every day—marking the occasion when his friends celebrated his ninetieth birthday (January 28, 2026). He was a giant of Albanian literature, nominated more than fifteen times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, with works (his numerous books) translated into forty-six languages. He was my idol; I never had the chance to meet him when I visited the Writers' League, as he had left during the final months of the dictatorship (1990), traveling to Paris to seek political asylum in France. Later, he divided his time between Paris and Tirana. The only time I saw him was right there, in that café, just a stone's throw away; my idol was finally within reach. I wanted to thank him because his story had inspired me, but a sense of bitterness washed over me: he was unwell. A friend was supporting him by the arm, and his legs seemed to be giving way, devoid of strength; what I saw pained me deeply. We sat alone for a long time in the park where the café is located; our eyes met a couple of times, and that was my greatest joy. I was torn about whether to speak to him, but my intuition decided for me: an inner voice seemed to say, "Let him drink his coffee in peace; he is nearing the end of his journey." I saw the pain in his eyes. It took me only five seconds to make that painful decision, and—sadly, as always—I was right. He passed away a week later (July 1, 2024). Now, I am very glad I did not disturb his peace; He was truly a most noble man and would have tried with all his might to answer me. Paris, the city he loved so dearly, paid tribute to him with a commemorative plaque in the heart of the city—on Boulevard Saint-Michel, where Kadare lived.🤍📚☕🌹
