Elegance Under Pressure. Luke Derrick keeps the containment of British tailoring while loosening its constraints. The London-based designer and LVMH Prize semi-finalist founded his label around the idea of “Elegance Under Pressure.” In his hands, British tailoring softens: its discipline remains, but its rigidity relaxes, allowing the body to move more freely through the pressures of everyday life. Derrick’s clothing sits between the codes of uniform, sportswear, and classic tailoring. Small gestures in construction subtly shift how garments behave. Hidden hoodie pockets inside tailored jackets allow the wearer to slide their hands inside as they would in sportswear. The posture changes: shoulders drop, the spine loosens. One appears composed while the body remains at ease. Functionality in Derrick’s work is often discreet. Coat pockets are lined with Selvyt, the cloth used by the Royal Navy to polish silver. Positioned where a watch or phone rests, the fabric quietly cleans these objects as they move through the pocket during the day. “Everything is designed to be as thoughtless as possible,” Derrick says. That thoughtlessness becomes its own form of luxury, yet it is the result of a rigorous approach and deep research. Read the full feature on our Substack, link in bio.
