And so we begin again...

The Charles Reese Experience continues to honor the enduring flame of James Baldwin's 102nd birthday throughout the month of August!

I am deeply honored to have served as the Dramaturg & Voice-Over Artist for Southern Dance Works and choreographer Germaul Barnes' world premiere, James Baldwin: Letter to My Nephew—a piece ignited by Baldwin's 1963 masterpiece, The Fire Next Time. The dance project took place on June 13th & 14th @The DJD Theatre at the Birmingham School of the Arts.

In this snippet, "Cool Brother" from my debut album, James Baldwin & Me: A Centennial Tribute ( 2024 Voice Arts Award Winner) , is beautifully re-imagined with new music by Grammy winner Luke Crowder.

This movement pays heavy homage to the Atlanta Child Murders of 1981—the exact era I met Baldwin as a freshman at Morehouse College. We bridge that history with the trials of today's society, knowing his prophetic work is more relevant NOW than ever.

As Baldwin once said, "You don't tell life, life tells you."

Afrofuturist is more than a genre, it’s a tool for innovating society. We’re thrilled to welcome acclaimed playwright, novelist, and screenwriter Penelope Lowder to this year’s Afrofuturist Art Fair. Through stories rooted in Black life, humor, resistance, and possibility, their work challenges audiences to see both the world as it is and as it could be.
Meet them at Stonehaven Studios’ Afrofuturist Art Fair. Free tickets available now on Eventbrite and @stonehavenstudios #free #artfair #event #blackplaywrights #losangeles

Last night ( 04.18.26), I had the pleasure of attending a performance by my fellow Grammy-voting colleague, J. Ivy, and his band at the Blue Note Los Angeles. It was a moving and inspiring experience that served as a reminder to always continue expanding, learning, and growing.

In honor of the 30th anniversary of National Poetry Month, I am sharing a snippet of "Speak," a spoken word and storytelling experience featuring my Griot Band: Kenneth Brown (trumpet), Derrick Butler (keyboards), Quinn Sims (upright bass), and Lorenzo Sanford III (cajon drum).

Special thanks to Cleo King, Dr. Karla Brown, and Tilita Lutterloh for their testimonies. I would also like to acknowledge Jason Williams for the photography and Eternal for the archival footage. Truly, it takes a village.

For bookings, please see the link in my bio.

Gratitude and appreciation.

Flashing back to Season TWO of CLI, eleven years ago…

On this day, CLI students gathered at USC to read from their manuscripts to a room full of writers, loved ones, and local publishers.

While the poetry publishing class has changed and expanded its offering throughout the years, three things remain the same - we love poets, we love building community, and we want to see poets get published.

Join our community of poets! Season 13 of the CLI Poetry Publishing Class applications are open now.

We have chapters in Long Beach, Orange County, San Diego, Los Angeles, Denver, Pomona, and National! We also have an alum workshop class if you are interested in workshopping. It is called our pillars class that supports the @simslibraryofpoetry!

Apply today!

If our vote is so meaningless why does the GOP do every gerrymandering thing it can to take it away? I mean, damn, folks
