Thirty years ago today, a dark day in October 1996 took the lives of good colleagues and dear friends. Having served alongside Capt. Steve Smith, Officer Donny Brill, and Sgt. Sullivan during my time with the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, their loss is felt just as deeply now as it was then. I still remember talking to Capt. Smith on that last Friday. We spoke weekly through his role as a Court Prosecutor at the Lowell District Court. I had no idea that a regular work conversation would be our last—or that it would be the final time I would see Steve, Donny, and Sgt. Sullivan. Three decades have passed, but time cannot fade the memory of their dedication, their exceptional character, and the laughter we shared. The honor of serving with them stays with me. You are deeply missed and never forgotten.

It was truly meaningful to stand alongside families, friends, and members of our community for the dedication of the Garden of Peace at Fort Hill Park. Behind every name and every life we remember is a family, a friend, and a community that continues to carry their memory with them every day. This garden is more than a place, it is a space to remember the people we love, reflect on the lives they touched, and find comfort and healing together. Thank you to the City of Lowell, the organizers, and especially the families who helped make this beautiful Garden of Peace a reality. #lowell #community #18thMiddlesex #together #remember

May we continue to come together as a community, remember those we lost, and never forget the bravery and unity shown on September 11, 2001.
