Rijksakademie resident Olga Micińska @o_o.m__m presents ‘Routine Maintenance: A Tale’ together with Lower Levant Company (Emiddio Vasquez & Peter Eramian) at Thkio Ppalies in Nicosia, Cyprus. The exhibition brings two existing works into conversation, tracing histories of military transmission and surveillance in Cyprus alongside the lives and movements of bats. Recordings range from frequencies captured near British RAF military antennae to bat calls recorded in Cyprus, Cuba and Texas. Through speakers, ceramics and sculptural forms inspired by artificial bat houses, the works explore how human and other-than-human life inhabits and crosses militarised landscapes. ‘Routine Maintenance: A Tale’ opens 16 October at 19:00 and runs through 6 November 2026.

Routine Maintenance: A Tale Lower Levant Company & Olga Micińska Thkio Ppalies is pleased to present Routine Maintenance: A Tale, a sculptural sound environment by Lower Levant Company (Emiddio Vasquez & Peter Eramian) and Olga Micińska. At the core of the installation two existing works are brought into conversation: Crossover Frequency Spectrum (2024, LLC in collaboration with Gaetano di Gregorio) and Bad Luck to Every Magistrate, and Bad luck to Every Gamekeeper (2026, LLC & Olga Micińska), previously presented at the 60th Venice Biennale Cyprus Pavilion (@forever.informed) and the @sonicacts Biennial in Amsterdam, respectively. The title of the exhibition cites the official statement by the Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) authorities regarding the ongoing developments at Akrotiri Salt Lake, where locals are protesting plans to erect as many as 68 new communications antennae, describing them as “antennae of death”. According to the statement, any work currently ongoing is “associated with routine maintenance” and not with plans to install new listening antennae. So the tale goes… Opening: 16/10/2026, 7pm Duration: 16/10 – 06/11/2026 Opening hours: Wednesday-Friday, 6-8pm (or by appointment) Poster by Olga Micińska Photo by Haris Nicolaou

Free City Radio 299, Artist Emiddio Vasquez speaks on the current and historical transmission politics of Cyprus https://soundcloud.com/freecityradio/299-artist-emiddio-vasquez On this edition of Free City Radio we hear from artist Emiddio Vasquez @emmidiately speaking on the current and historical dynamics on the ways that colonial forces, particularly the British, have used the territory of Cyprus for colonial and now neo-colonial transmissions projects. Images are from the exhibition by the Lower Levant Company @lowerlevantcompany, a collaboration between Peter Eramian @petereramian and Emiddio. The accompanying photos are by Ugo Carme @ugocarmeni_studio. Along with a graphic speaking to the project highlighted in the interview, the Asharq Al-Adna, Near East Arab Broadcasting Station that operated for sometime in Cyprus. This interview speaks to a collective presentation and publication project that Emiddio worked on for the Cyprus pavilion at the Venice biennial in 2024 called “On a wildflower-lined gravel track off a quiet thoroughfare...” This project visits both this transmission history that addresses colonial dynamics and the scandal in Cyprus surrounding the presence of an Israeli government connected intelligence gathering operation discovered not far from the international airport in Cyprus. Learn more about the project and publication here: emiddiovasquez.info foreverinformed.com/artists-bio-1 This interview program is supported in 2025 by the Social Justice Centre at Concordia University. Our eyes met at the Sonic Acts Biennial 2026 Dalia Maini on its third edition, “Melted for Love” titled after Mahmoud Darwish and built around one insistence: colonial violence must be met with love. Not love as sentiment. Love as political practice. Review up now. Sculpture Bad luck to every magistrate, and bad luck to every gamekeeper 2026 Lower Levant Company @lowerlevantcompany in collaboration with Olga Micińska @o_o.m__m Wood, metal, insulation foam, transducer speakers, locking pins. Audio, Stereo, 10min loop with number intermissions. Presented at @sonicacts biennial 2026: Melted for Love, curated by Angeliki Tzortzakaki (@paradise_host). Two wooden resonant structures – modelled on the interiors of bat houses and resembling ritual contraptions – transmit a soundscape composed of roosting bats, a fictional number station, and ELF radio recordings captured in Cyprus near the British RAF bases in Akrotiri, Limassol, and Troodos. RAF Akrotiri served as the transmission locus for a number station allegedly operated by the British Secret Intelligence Service (1960–2008) to send encoded messages across the region. Discovered by radio enthusiasts, the station opened each broadcast with a jingle from the English folk song The Lincolnshire Poacher. The project’s title reframes a couplet from this song as an omen aimed at the ‘magistrates’ and ‘gamekeepers’ active on the island and in the surrounding region, while fictionalising coded numbers through local land histories. Bats bridge the non-human world with their environment through echolocation, embodying an ecological ‘call and response’, prompting a reconsideration of how we engage with transmission technologies and their ecological consequences. Their calls reinterpret Cyprus’s geopolitical radio history as an ‘antenna island’ shaped by surveillance and eavesdropping. These sonic abodes propose a symbolic reinhabitation of bat colonies near the bases, subverting RAF infrastructures and inviting listeners to imagine rebuilding after misfortune befalls the ‘magistrates’ and ‘gamekeepers’. Listening can be a form of resistance. This Wednesday evening at W139, we bring together Emiddio Vasquez of Lower Levant Company and Diana Policarpo, who use sound to trace what power tries to erase. Reflecting on their artworks ‘Bad Luck to Every Magistrate, and Bad Luck to Every Gamekeeper’ and a commissioned work ‘Bugio Eco-Station’, they will talk about echolocation and non-human sound as ways of sensing militarisation and colonial infrastructure. The evening will conclude with Urok Shirhan’s live performance ‘Every Day Things Disappear’, a sonic fiction from the occupied land of ‘ABC’, where remembering becomes a subversive act. Part of the Biennial exhibition at W139. 🎟️ Tickets via the link in bio! 📸: Pieter Kers and Monika Karczmarczyk

“Bad luck to every magistrate, and bad luck to every gamekeeper “ With Lower Levant Company (LLC) Now on view at W139, as part of the Sonic Acts Biennial Happy to see these bathouses hanging but most of all happy with the whole collaboration with LLC (Emiddio Vasquez and Peter Eramian). It has been a ride through many time zones, temporalities, territories, materialities and bat caves. Many alignments. Thank you for this invitation and for the process, Peter and Emiddio ❣️ Thanks also to everyone without whom it wouldn’t come together: Angeliki, Radina, Otakar, Tije, Andre, Martijn, Seamus and the whole Sonic Acts team!

Join us Friday February 6 for the opening of Sonic Acts Biennial 2026: 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 at W139! 🩷 The exhibition 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦, taking place across W139, Arti et Amicitiae, and Rozenstraat, as part of the Sonic Acts Biennial 2026, explores how the notion of ‘home’ is being renegotiated by climate crisis, colonial histories, and forced displacement. The exhibition brings together installations, films, sound works, and performances that reflect on how land, bodies, and ecosystems are shaped and altered by systems of exploitation. By listening to the echoes left behind, it highlights gestures of love and connection with land and community as forms of resistance and repair. At W139, the exhibition focuses on how ecosystems absorb the pressures of militarisation, colonial occupation, and environmental disruption. The artworks follow different types of signals – such as sound waves, vibrations, radio transmissions, and ecological changes – as they move across landscapes, through subsurface networks, and throughout the more-than-human world. With works by Lower Levant Company & Olga Micińska, Adelita Husni-Bey, Diana Policarpo & Bernardo Gaeiras, Alina Schmuch, and Maeve Brennan. This edition marks Sonic Acts Biennial’s biggest exhibition to date. Opening throughout February and March, ‘Melted for Love’ unfolds across W139, Arti et Amicitiae, and Rozenstraat, with a ‘satellite exhibition’ at Het Documentaire Paviljoen, and a special collaboration with Framer Framed. ‘Melted for Love’ explores how home is renegotiated under climate catastrophe, colonialism, and forced displacement, bringing together newly commissioned installations, films, sound works, and performances. By listening to what remains, we turn to gestures of love as a practice of resistance and repair. Together, we learn how listening, care, and collectivity might offer ways of living otherwise. With works by more than 30 artists: Adelita Husni-Bey, Alina Schmuch, Almagul Menlibayeva, Ameneh Solati, Arjuna Neuman, Asel Kadyrkhanova, Bernardo Gaeiras, buulbuul, Christian Nyampeta, Dilyara Kaipova, Diana Policarpo, Dominique White, Eglė Budvytytė, Eliana Otta, Femke Herregraven, HUNITI GOLDOX, Kamila Narysheva, Kivu Ruhorahoza, Lower Levant Company, Maeve Brennan, Nikolay Karabinovich, Nour Shantout, Noor Abed, Olga Micińska, Sébastien Robert, Vicky Clarke, and more. 🤎 Find the full programme on our website from 16 December.
