Yesterday we held our first Historical Martial Arts Club meeting in the new space. It feels good to get out of the heat.

While we are grateful to the public parks system for hosting us this year, it’s much easier to practice when you aren’t facing the elements.

⚔️🌸Warriors In Bloom 2026🌸⚔️

Wow… What a weekend I just had-

I worked as one of the volunteers for such an amazing event held at @agecrofthallgardens and run by @viragoalley

I have to say everyone I worked with made me feel warm and welcome to the environment. A place where many weirdo’s and small artisans can unite. A place where those who don’t fit our modern normal can breathe.

Also a wonderful photographer @duncleteddy took a couple of the photos while I was there! The one of me with the sword out and the one with me holding the sword to the side while my partner was hugging me!

I felt a sense to help with this since @viragoalley gave me a place to feel more free. Just starting to get into sword combat has been rough for me, and it’s been hard to have the confidence to move forward. However I am very grateful for the patience of the instructors for @viragoalley HEMA. I would like to add a particularly specific mention to @mended_arrow for being even extra patient and considerate instructor for me in the process. Thank you…

My wonderful hard working partner @lowesbian (and partner in crime 😉) presented me an absolutely astonishing piece of work. A sword custom to me and I have no amount of words that could possibly match how I feel about it. I cried in an unbelievably happy manner.

And all in all… I loved the whimsical atmosphere of it all. I hope to work hard towards being in the sparring arena some day.

Oh my stars what a weekend I just had…

I normally work outside since I have an outdoor job anyway, but within two back to back days I experienced the blistering sun and the freezing rain. However the experience I say was worth it.

I met a lot of awesome local and not so local artisans and performers and solidified a new connection worth my time. The two knuckleheads also spent the second day with me and we may have wrestled a little-

@viragoalley is the nonprofit behind the Richmond Ren Faire, whose mission is to provide an accessible and inclusive platform for the exploration, education, and preservation of historical martial arts and artisan trades.

Earlier this year, Virago Alley launched its own historic martial arts club, one of many educational initiatives that will take shape in 2026.

It’s never too late to play, to venture into the woods, to run through trees and along winding tracks, and to pick up a sword, shield, or spear and pretend to be warriors with your friends.

There’s something powerful in that kind of play. It’s not just imagination, it’s movement, connection, and shared experience. You learn together, challenge each other, and grow together.

This is what Virago Alley is all about. The organization is rooted in building a deeper appreciation for the past to empower our community to connect and carry each other forward.

The Richmond Ren Faire is an invitation to explore those practices and trades that have been passed down for hundreds of years. Ones that reward patience and the time invested to create quality pieces that emphasize craftsmanship.

We look forward to continuing to expand upon our educational offerings after the Faire to include a variety of hands on workshops both in martial arts and other historic trades such as calligraphy, book binding, herbalism, and so much more.

The Combat Guild brings together fighters, guards, and martial artists who treat combat as a disciplined art form rather than an act of war. Their sparring is ritualized and intentional, an expression of focus, discipline, and embodied skill. Through training, demonstration, and mentorship, they inspire the brave, engage the curious, and show younger generations that strength is shaped through practice, patience, and care.

Throughout the Faire, live combat demonstrations take place in The Alley, the guild’s dedicated arena, where mastery is measured in timing, endurance, and honor.
