Robotic arms, strange metal carcasses, flying-saucer lights. The dystopian aesthetic à la Black Mirror, spanning cinema — most recently The Assessment — and literature, has invaded our collective imagination, revolutionising visual art, its motifs and its language. – writes Giorgia Basili @giorgia_basili_ – Some see AI as a threat poised to turn against its own creator, others are already using it to create malware and carry out large-scale cyber-attacks, and those who fear it may manipulate minds and influence human desires. Admittedly, there are already some warning signs, and proposals such as the Pentagon’s plan to use artificial intelligence for mass surveillance and to coordinate the armed forces are cause for concern.

[...] However, some artists have chosen to focus first and foremost on issues already relevant today, such as the accumulation of waste from obsolete technology. Where do records, video cassettes and MP3 players end up when we throw them away from our homes? In which landfill site will broken spare parts, Nokias from the 2000s, iPhone batteries, televisions, large-screen TVs, computers and routers be piled up? [...]

Here is a selection of five exhibitions, featured in offseen, which highlight this theme – at times subtle, at times strident. – concludes our new guest reviewer, Giorgia Basili, in her article “A contemporary landscape of debris, obsolete technologies and archaeological adventures.”

Read the monthly round-up of five offseen exhibitions worth seeing!

Great to see traction on the map 🩷 The number of pins in Europe grows as usual, but there are also new additions from Shanghai, Guadalajara, and USA 🔍

Our independent reviewer has picked 5 of the best offseen exhibitions to see this September — and there’s plenty more happening beyond the usual art-world circuit.

The review comes out on Wednesday, so be ready! 📜

Meanwhile, this week, we’re especially thrilled to welcome a pin from China, alongside many other exciting exhibitions, events, and unexpected encounters.

Exhibitions on the map are active only while they’re open to visitors — so you’ll never waste a trip on a show that’s already over. 💡

But here’s the best part: once an exhibition lands on the map, it stays in the archive forever. 🗺️💟

Discover what’s on now. Explore what came before. Build your own map of exhibitions worth remembering.

Fun fact: We’re excited to share that, despite the “low-traffic season” in contemporary art, we’re currently experiencing the highest level of interest ever in offseen placements across the Americas.

Our map is designed as a globally reaching experience, but Europe has been the most “pin-populated” region since the very beginning.

Now, things are getting even more interesting! We’re excited to welcome new pins from Brazil, Mexico, Michigan, and Los Angeles, USA.

@lowgroundpressure shows which exhibitions are happening around the world. Through its own platform, a weekly newsletter, and in partnership with the contemporary art map offseen, Low Ground Pressure reaches a wide audience with its publications. Over 500 exhibitions have been featured so far.

If you follow contemporary art, you end up there.

That is exactly why it fits. In art, authorship needs transparency.

From now on, Low Ground Pressure partners with HUMAVE.

Happy to have you with us!
