I’ve always said from the start of this project that it focuses on people, not tattoos. I might happen to take portraits of tattooed people, but the overwhelming drive in my heart is to travel the country meeting the most free thinking and wonderful souls. Dan Allen is no exception, from a few months ago when @danallentattoo contacted me saying that I should come down to Manchester to check out Rambos he’s been a complete gentleman and helped me massively on the run up to making this trip happen. He offered a place to stay, emailed me with countless amounts of insider info and even bought me dinner one night. I say it constantly but people, really are incredible.

When I arrived in Manchester, the whole place seemed a little overwhelming and it was fantastic that on the first night I could retire to meet Dan and Stephen Byrne in a bar for a couple of pints and a little brief on the city. We clicked instantly, there’s something completely magical about travelling between different countries, hundreds of miles away from home and being able to find people it feels like I’ve known my whole life. Over the course of the week Dan had the good grace to make sure that I came out drinking almost every night, meeting countless people from around the city and feeling like I’d made friends with all of them. I’ve honestly not laughed more in a long time. He also put my name forward to the legendary Rambo, to make sure I could have a look around the museum and get him for a few snaps, which are coming next and I promise you, are worth the wait. I even had the opportunity to get tattooed by Dan one evening which was exceedingly generous especially on top of everything else he did for me.

Dan is an excellent tattooer, that much is clear. But I can testify that Dan is above all a fantastic, earnest and solid human. I won’t forget standing on the roof of his building, fresh tattoos bloody, a little bit pissed, full of good food and feeling like I had a brother in Manchester.

Thank you Dan for making this all possible, without people like you the project would not exist and I hope you know how much it means to me.

Go get tattooed by Dan. He’s the best.

Well, what a trip that was. Manchester successfully stole my heart, largely because of the incredible cast of fantastic people that I met whilst I was there.

A massive thank you has to go to the king who is @danallentattoo for putting me up on his sofa for a few nights! If it weren’t for him asking me to come down and offering up his flat the trip wouldn’t have happened! So thank you so much mate. A brother I never knew I had for sure.

Further thank you’s have to go out to all the studios I visited on my trip. Everyone as usual was incredibly welcoming and warm, the north is so friendly. I was always offered a cup of tea or a coffee always treated well and more and more recently I’m being understood for what I’m doing and the reasoning behind it! Also the amount of you who already know what I’m doing is astounding.

Finally thank you to everyone who came for drinks last night as a bit of a send off! I felt like this trip I’ve made an incredible group of friends. It completely surprises me still that I can travel halfway down to the country, meet people I’ve never met before, take some fun photographs and somehow leave with my heart genuinely aching because I have to leave behind such cool people!

My expectations for this project and where I could go are constantly surpassed. I feel incredibly lucky and humbled to be able to do this all around the uk.

This photo was taken walking between bars with the last men standing after a fantastic evening trading stories and bad tattoos with everyone I’ve met!
