POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

POV: fieldwork pure joy. Join Kendall Valentine, an expert on marshes and how they form and change over time, as she explores the history of Alaska's Copper River Delta through sediment cores. When she and her colleagues felt their cores hit sand, they realized the Eyak River likely plays a pivotal role in feeding the marshes in this area (while for most marshes, you think of the ocean as bringing the water onto the marsh)! They could also see evidence of the 1964 Alaska earthquake... all by looking at mud! So cool.

Marshes are just muddy wastelands… Psych, got you! These ecosystems are actually teeming with life. In fact, you may have eaten something that ultimately came from a salt marsh or river delta today, from fish to rice! Marshes often help to protect residential areas behind them from waves, flooding, and storms. But many misconceptions about these areas persist, including that they are smelly.

Dive into the world of salt marshes with Dr. Kendall Valentine! Kendall studies marshes at LSU and now at UW! New short podcast episode “in the field” out today. Watch on YouTube, link in bio!

Alignment is key!
I am proud to announce alongside our office of research and economic development that our very own Clint Willson will be stepping into a new leadership role of Associate Vice Chancellor of Water and Coast. Dr. Wilson will coordinate LSU’s research efforts in coastal resilience, water, energy and other related fields. His work will play a critical role in our mission to become a Top 50 Research Institution.

As Clint puts it, “My job is to bring them together.” And at LSU, we have the experts, collaboration and commitment to do just that. #LSU #LSUResearch
