LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY! 🔥🔥🔥

Brittian Qualls (‘19, ‘17) is doing great things in his second year as an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Louisiana State University-Alexandria.

A graduate of Sulphur High School, Britt attended McNeese State University on an Honors College scholarship. He graduated from the McNeese Department of Mathematical Sciences twice, earning his B.S. in 2017 and his M.S. in 2019. He wrote his master’s thesis under the direction of Dr. Neil Carnes, proving some original results in combinatorial design theory.

Britt continued his graduate studies at Louisiana State University, where he earned a second M.S. in Mathematics in 2021 and his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2025, writing his dissertation on a topic in structural graph theory.

Since joining the Department of Mathematics & Computer Science at LSU-A, Britt teaches a range of undergraduate math courses, collaborates with local businesses to advance the mathematics curriculum, and serves as faculty sponsor of the LSU-A Math Club.

We are so proud of you, Britt, and all you’ve accomplished! Keep up the amazing work.

THIS GIRL IS ON FIRE! 🔥🔥🔥

In her first year pursuing her PhD in Mathematics at LSU, McNeese DMS alum Ngoc (Nora) Bui (‘25) passed all three of her qualifying exams — an incredible accomplishment.

To earn a PhD in Mathematics, students typically must:
1. Pass 2-3 written qualifying exams in 2-3 years.
2. Conduct preliminary research and pass an oral exam.
3. Write a dissertation on their research and present it at a final oral defense.

In total, earning a PhD in mathematics usually takes 5-6 years, and conducting research in math means inventing (or discovering) new math. 🤯

We are so proud of you Nora! Keep up the stellar work.

Meet JeMyia, an @lsumathematics and @geaux_teach junior from Nashville, Tennessee, who is spending her summer inspiring the next generation of students through teaching and mentorship. As a Summer Teaching Fellow with Breakthrough Collaborative in Louisville, Kentucky, she is helping middle school students build confidence in math and creating a supportive, engaging learning environment.

📚 Teaching with purpose:
This summer, JeMyia is teaching math to 6th–9th grade students while also leading activities like drama club and a talent show. Through the experience, she hopes to strengthen her leadership skills, grow as an educator, and become a positive support system for her students.

➗ Why she chose mathematics:
JeMyia is passionate about helping students feel confident in math, especially in a subject where many students develop self-doubt early on. Her motivation to teach comes from her own experiences as a student and her desire to be the kind of mentor and educator she once needed herself.

💡 What she loves most about her field:
For JeMyia, mathematics is about more than numbers. She enjoys guiding students through challenging concepts and helping them realize they are capable of success. She believes math can empower students in everyday life and open doors for their future.

🎯 Career goals:
JeMyia hopes to teach mathematics in a high-needs school setting while also earning her Actuarial Science certification.

📣 Her mission:
“I believe the world needs more people who care, and I am one of those people.”

Across Louisiana, many students grow up believing math isn’t for them—but LSU faculty and staff are working to change that.

This April, official proclamations from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sid Edwards recognize Math Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of strengthening math education statewide📚.

Meet Moises, a graduate student in @lsumathematics. He is originally from Colima, Mexico, and is a first-generation college student. Before pursuing mathematics, Moises considered a career in music and is formally trained in traditional Mexican guitar.

➗ What he loves most about mathematics:
Moises is drawn to the creative side of pure mathematics. He enjoys reducing complex observations to their most fundamental and abstract form. “Where a scientist might see a sea of variables, a mathematician works in a space built from short strings of logic.”

🌎 Why math excites him:
Even without experiments or measurements, a mathematical proof discovered in his office remains true anywhere in the universe. While developing new ideas can be challenging, he embraces the process. “Research is 99.9 percent failure and 0.1 percent success. As long as that success rate is not zero, I know I am on the right track.”

📚 Research and professional growth:
As part of his work, Moises regularly presents at conferences and seminars to share new techniques and connect with scholars in related fields. He has attended programs such as the Séminaire de Mathématiques Supérieures in Montréal and the Texas Summer School on Mathematical Physics. These experiences continue to shape his development as a researcher.

🎓 Support that made an impact:
Moises was awarded the A.K. and Shirley Barton Superior Graduate Student Scholarship in Mathematics, which supports travel and conference expenses so he can present his research.

📣 His advice to students:
“Stubbornness and hard work will take you farther than talent alone. Build a strong support network and be welcoming to others.”
