This kitchen cooks up more than just fun. It feeds a heck of a lot of hungry people everyday. We got to partake in a cooking contest a la Chopped! It was an amazing way to support a true community partner while having a lot of fun. Just had breakfast at HSS after yesterday’s successful total right knee replacement. Dr Carli and his team did a spectacular job and being spoiled by an even more spectacular team of nurses (both Pinays and non Pinays). I am so grateful to Jian Molit for her super TLC and making sure everyone on this floor knew she was my friend and fellow Pinay. As my day nurse said “her people are our people.” Does anyone ever wonder why Filipinos are famous for healing and giving first class health care? Next time someone asks me if I’m a nurse, my answer will be “unfortunately I’m not” ♥️🥰♥️

Thanks to Lourdes Marzan for taking me to HSS for my surgery yesterday and will pick me up again later in the afternoon. She said, “what are friends for?” Thanks to her help, Romy can continue his recovery from cardiac bypass surgery.

Several weeks ago, we both faced these challenges with no clue as to how we were going to get through them. But a whole village of true friends came through for us by way of prayer, well wishes, sending us useful things, suggestions, advice and just being there when we needed you.

No words except the simple Thank You and We Love All of You. 🙏🏻♥️🔥😢

Senior activists can still have fun! We had a great reunion yesterday during Father’s Day at PYB. We decided to honor our forefathers who bravely fought against colonial masters and local homegrown dictators by getting together and loading up on food and tsismis 😁.

And as the oxtail kare kare came out, I reminded Mila Manalac that I learned how to cook that dish from her. I explained the process of boiling the oxtail until tender, letting it cool overnight in the fridge for the fat to solidify on top. Then you remove that layer of fat and use a bit of it to sauté onions, garlic & tomatoes to finish the kare kare adding ground toasted peanuts (or peanut butter if you’re in a rush) before returning the oxtail and stock into the stew. Mila listened with great interest and said “ah ganoon ba? Nakalimutan ko na.” (Is that so? I’ve already forgotten how it’s done.). She added that she had learned that from her mother, who was sitting across us and at 94, looked decades younger than her age.

I’ve always believed that sharing cooking techniques and secrets are the best way to solidify friendships. And of course, eating shared dishes served family style is the best way to celebrate our communities.
