Is there still room for art that changes minds, rather than merely validating our entrenched worldviews? This week’s guest, Jenny Tibbels, has dedicated her career to staging experimental works for the stage and screen that bridge the personal and political while morally challenging their audiences.

Jenny grew up in Baltimore, the child of locally famous activists, and moved to New York City where she worked in experimental theater and eventually founded her own company. After moving to Beacon she helped to revive the Beacon Film Society, alongside filmmaker Lucas Millard.

In our interview she talks about BFS’s fall program, including two upcoming documentary screenings:

“Steal This Story Please!” highlights the work of Democracy Now! Journalist Amy Goodman. (Screening on September 18 at 7pm)

“Down by the Riverside” follows Pete Seeger, his wife Toshi, and the grassroots community that sprung up in Beacon around the Sloop Clearwater as a symbol of environmental stewardship. (Screening on October 16 at 7pm)

Tickets and more info about both films at Howlandculturalcenter.org.

I’m excited to share a new project that I’ve been lensing has officially started post production.

The Safety Town Movie is a feature-length documentary about a nearly century-old child safety program that teaches real-world safety skills to kids in miniature towns. The film follows communities across the U.S. working to keep these programs alive — highlighting the people, places, and children that make Safety Town so special. Told through a child’s-eye view and an immersive verité style, the documentary is a warm, cinematic look at growing up, civic responsibility, and how we care for each other in an uncertain world.

“This is one of the great untold American stories,” said H Spencer Young, the film’s writer and director. “What drew me to Safety Town from the very beginning was what it represented on a larger level: childhood, public trust, civic imagination, and the fragile social fabric connecting American communities.”

Written and directed by H Spencer Young and shot by cinematographer Claudia Raschke, ASC (RBG, Boys State, Julia, My Name Is Pauli Murray), the film was recently named a finalist for the Rogovy Miller/Packan Documentary Film Fund. Patrick Hamm @hammhammgram whose work has screened at SXSW, IDFA, and CPH:DOX, serves as producer.

The Safety Town Movie has been captured with multiple Canon Eos C500 Mk II cameras with complete sets of Canon CN-E primes.

Today, as I walked into what’s now BCI, I witnessed the removal of The CineHub signs. I don't often go there anymore, so it felt like a strange coincidence that I was there.

A bittersweet moment that ends the twelve years filled with ideas, growth and community.

Although this era has come to a close and the name changes, the essence of The CineHub will live on, evolving into the next chapter as BCI. @beaconcreativeindustries

Thank you, Ed, for a decade of mentorship and partnership.

And to Sal, Rob, Lucas, Guy, and everyone shaping BCI into what’s next, I’ll be here cheering you on!

I’ve had a great time at Climate Week in New York City, showing Raising Aniya at the Climate Film Festival, seeing old friends, and making some new ones. The festival trailer begins with some shots from Raising Aniya, which was cool to see. Got to do some podcast interviews as well. Stay tuned for new episodes of the podcast coming to ChrysalisPodcast.org.
