We were delighted to welcome students from United Charter AMS High School in the Bronx to TAAC House 17 on Governors Island!

The students were wonderful—curious, enthusiastic, and full of thoughtful questions about the artists’ creative processes, materials, and the subjects behind their artworks. It was a joy to see their genuine interest in contemporary art and their eagerness to learn!

Thank you to the students and teachers for visiting and sharing such an engaging experience with us!

Yuyu Demi Chen 陳又瑜
Metamorphosis of Two Islands

A homeland carried across the sea.

Yuyu Demi Chen suspends fallen bark collected on Governors Island in an arrangement evoking the shape of Taiwan. Photographs of Taiwanese temple rituals, transferred onto the bark, mingle with its natural textures as shadows extend its fragmented contours. Connecting the landscape of one island with the cultural memories of another, the installation reflects on migration, memory, and belonging.

📍 TAAC House 17, Nolan Park, Governors Island
On view through November 1, 2026.

A fantastic performance of ** Stone Matsu ** by Taiwanese American artist Hui-Ying Tsai on Saturday, October 17, at Governors Island!

On a chilly, windy afternoon, Hui-Ying arrived by ferry at Governors Island’s Yankee Pier, beginning a powerful and poetic journey. She led participants on a procession to Castle Williams, where they used a whip, collected stones, and cast them into the harbor. The performance continued with the ritual of gathering water and carrying it back to TAAC House 17 in Nolan Park.

Inspired by Matsu (Mazu), the Taiwanese sea goddess revered as a protector of sailors and coastal communities, Stone Matsu explores the spiritual relationship between people, land, and water. Through the symbolic acts of carrying stones, casting them into the harbor, and collecting water, Hui-Ying Tsai transforms a journey across Governors Island into a contemporary ritual of protection, migration, memory, and belonging.

The performance connects Taiwan’s maritime traditions with the immigrant experience, inviting participants to reflect on their own journeys across oceans and the connections between islands.

Thank you, @Hui-Ying Tsai, for this memorable and evocative performance!

A small parrot from the Native American Festival in Nolan Park on Governors Island unexpectedly flew into House 17! It fluttered around the exhibition space, making us nervous about possible damage to the artworks, as we had experienced a similar situation before. After nearly an hour of trying, we finally managed to guide the parrot back outside, where it perched on a tree branch before flying away!

“Pending Paused” is an on-site installation with an interactive performance by Hsiao-Chu (Julia) Hsia to discuss borders set on nature to divide land and water. The movement performance with participatory sections invites the audience to reflect on the boundaries that are marked to claim possessions, dividing people in and out. It speaks to the shared experiences in the immigrant community across self-identification and personal liberty.
