This photographic work recreates Gaspare Diziani’s The Annunciation, translating a historical religious painting into a contemporary staged photograph. Rooted in the “fabricated reality assignment” during my second year of photography at TMU, by fabricating the scene with models, clothing, props and lighting, I explore how an image can be reconstructed and given new life through photography. For example, in the original painting Mother Mary is depicted embracing the angel’s presence, however in this project I urged to juxtapose that entirely by having the model reject the angel’s initial appearance, as we analyze the image we can see that the curtains on Mary’s side are wrinkled and chaotic, symbolizing her state of mind (confusion, indecision, conflicted, etc) while on the angels side the curtains are smooth, clear and poised.
