What a day! 💛

Last Saturday, we came together to celebrate the contributions of refugees to the UK.

Throughout the day, we explored courage in its many forms through stories, poetry, music, food, dance, art, and conversation. We reflected on the courage it takes to rebuild a life, to share your story, to celebrate your culture, to welcome others, and to stand alongside one another.

But more than anything, we experienced courage through community.

Every conversation, every performance, every shared meal and every new connection helped create a space of belonging, understanding and hope. A reminder that when we come together, we are stronger, richer and more connected.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, performed, volunteered, facilitated, cooked, shared, listened and brought such wonderful energy to the day. This festival is only possible because of the many people, organisations and communities who choose to show up and make Bath a more welcoming place.

As Refugee Week comes to a close, let’s carry these conversations, reflections and connections forward. Let’s continue building communities where everyone feels they belong.

On Thursday evening we had a Storytelling and Clay Workshop at Bath Artists’ Studios hosted by Sasha and Andrea.

We had a lovely evening of conversation, refreshments, and of course creating with clay.

If you’re going to today’s Celebrating Sanctuary event at Fairfield house, keep an eye out for Sasha’s table and her 2pm speech on Building Connection Through Clay!

Thank you to our hosts Andrea and Sasha and to all of our brilliant attendees - your pieces look fantastic!

On Wednesday we had a special edition of Beyond Bath exploring the theme of Refugee Week 2026: Courage 🩵

Our evening began with a video of Lord Alf Dubs who arrived in London via Kinder Transport in 1939. Alf talked about his experience as a refugee, how the UK was welcomed people who needed to seek refuge and what courage means to him. He also mentioned feeling that we have gone backwards in welcoming people.

We had time to reflect on our meaning of the word courage which we discussed with those around us. Throughout this week, my perspective of courage has changed and it has been interesting to explore the meaning of the word from other points of view. 💭

We then met our Beyond Bath panelists.

🇦🇫 Farida Hamidi, came to the UK from Afghanistan on a scholarship to study for her Masters in International Development at the University of Bath. Farida talked about the challenges faced by her and many other women in education when the Taliban took over in 2021. She talked about being forced to end her education in her home country and how courage to her is choosing hope and choosing to take action despite uncertainty.

🇾🇪 Abdul Hafedh Alaswadi is a Yemeni-Bathonian Muslim who came to Bath as a child. He is now an Interfaith Engagement Worker in Somerset. Hafedh talked about how his idea of courage was shaped by his mother and the courage she had to leave everything she knew for a better life. It is not necessarily the absence of fear but the ability to take action despite fear being present.

There was then time to reflect and consider the questions...
⭐️ How to create spaces that allow people to feel both courageous and safe?
🔒 What helps you decide what you are ready to share and what you want to protect?

Some of the thoughts following this reflection discussed how providing resources rather than just teaching is a huge benefit. The ability to be able to contribute helps a person to feel much more involved with their new community.

Thank you to our panelists, Farida and Hafedh, all of the volunteers at Bath Welcomes Refugees and to all of our fantastic audience members.

Last night was the Courage, Creativity and Connection panel at The Studio.

Throughout this event we explored the theme of this year’s festival, courage, and what it means to our panellists and audience.

The evening began with a film called “What Do You See?”, looking at how the world might be if things were catered to and built around women as well as men. We then took the time to reflect on the film and think of three words that came to mind.

After a reflection, we heard from our first panellist, Dr Mir Abdullah Miri, a refugee scholar from Afgahanistan. He talked about his experiences as a refugee both in his own country and here in the UK before reading ‘A Collective Mosaic of Courage’. This is a poem that he created using responses from 53 friends, family members and colleagues where he asked them to consider what courage means to them.

After some fantastic Mezze style food, we heard from Ahmed Abu Aisha, a humanitarian aid worker and photographer from Palestine. He talked about how he was often forced to be courageous, forced to stand up after falling and keep moving on without a choice. We then saw a collection of Ahmed’s photos that were taken during the war in Palestine.

The floor was then opened up to the audience for people to share their thoughts and feelings on such an insightful evening.

Thank you to our hosts, Helen and Bashart, our speakers, Mir and Ahmed, our chef, The Studio for voting for this event and to all of our fantastic audience members.
