For #sciartseptember day 15’s word “spawning”, I painted a tree frog calling into the night 🐸

The male’s resonant call, amplified by his vocal sacs, marks one of the earliest phases of reproduction. During spawning, frogs gather at breeding sites where these calls guide and attract females to the water.

For #sciartseptember day 4 « riverbank », I painted the elusive river acrobat : the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) 🦦

Did you know their presence has been recently confirmed in Tunisia (near Sidi El Barrak dam and in the Madjerda region), after decades without records ? They are clever freshwater predators known for their playfulness and skill learning. Young otters slide down muddy banks, wrestle, dive and chase each other. These antics are more than fun—they help them master hunting and swimming skills 🤿

For #sciartseptember day 11 « venomous », I painted a Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). 🐉

For a long time, we thought Komodo dragons killed their prey because their mouth bacteria caused fatal infections after a bite. But this « septic bite » hypothesis was rejected in 2009 when scientists discovered they actually possess venom glands in their lower jaws. The toxins in this venom lower blood pressure, impair blood clotting and promote massive blood loss, which overwhelms the prey’s physiology and leads to it collapse, unconsciousness, or death. 💀

#sciartseptember day 2: canopy. 🌲

I painted Levaillant’s woodpecker (Picus vaillantii), an exquisite species of woodpecker endemic to North Africa. It is found primarily in mountain forests, up to the altitude where trees stop growing (tree-line), around 2,000 meters. It’s a highly myrmecophagous bird, meaning ants form most of its diet 🐜

✨Starting on Monday!✨

#SciArtSeptember is a month-long creative challenge inspired by natural sciences. 🌿

Post on your own schedule.
Post new work, old work, work-in-progress.
Post artwork, music, words - whatever you like to make. (Thematic baked goods?🤞) A banner image promoting the month-long art challenge, Sci Art September 2025. The banner features an animal illustration plus text describing a monthly theme, weekly themes, and daily prompt words. The month-long theme is conservation. In order, the weekly themes are: Lands, species, water, people, and a shared future. Finally, the list of daily words is as follows. Week one: Islet, canopy, jewel, riverbank, corridor, prairie, boreal. Week two: Niche, vanishing, tawny, venomous, wandering, bottleneck, mimic. Week 3: Spawning, rift, trawl, cenote, depths, glacial, reef. Week 4: Fellowship, scouting, numbered, tireless, forage, bounded, harvest. Week 5: Foresight, dream. Most-asked questions about tent camping:

“What do you sleep on, and how do you make sure everyone stays warm at night?”

I get it - the thought of uncomfortable, chilly kids (or parents!) awake and crying through the night makes tent camping seem pretty intimidating.

But I promise it IS possible to create a comfy tent sleep setup that keeps everyone warm all night - even here in Alberta where summer nights often drop to single digits.

For camp mattresses, the key is to look at the R value, a rating of thermal insulation - the higher the R value, the more the mattress will insulate you from cold air and ground. You can buy fancy high-R mattresses or just stack two or more inexpensive mattresses, like we do for our toddler, to combine their R values.

Camp bedding also doesn’t have to cost a lot. We’ve invested in some higher-quality sleeping bags over the years, but for a long time we just grabbed a bundle of old blankets and made a nest, and we still just bring the pillows off our bed at home.

As long as you have good insulation from cold ground and air, your whole family be well on your way to a cozy night’s sleep in any tent!

Details of our setup ⬇️

⛺️tent is @marmot Halo 6 person tent

👩🏽👶🏻 mom and baby share @decathloncanada UltimComfort self-inflating camp mattress (R value 8.6) covered by a @fawcett_mattress wool topper (a recent addition, feels very bougie). Mom sleeps in a @bigagnes_ Dream Island double sleeping bag rated to -7C kept away from baby. (Young babies shouldn’t sleep on squishy inflatable mattresses, but this one is very firm and we follow safe cosleep guidelines.)

👦🏼 3 year old has stacked mattresses - closed cell foam @nemoequipment pad topped with a self-inflating @mec pad, combined R value 5.6. He sleeps in a @mec Little Dipper kids sleeping bag rated to 5C (which sounds cold to me, but he spends most of the night out of the bag anyway and claims he’s fine😅)

🧔🏻 Dad sleeps on a @nemoequipment inflatable mattress (R value 20, crazy!!) in a @thenorthface single sleeping bag rated to -7C.

It’s that time again. 🌟

This year I’m joined by my wonderful friend @LucyGemArt as co-host for #SciArtSeptember. Lucy envisioned this year’s theme of conservation. 🐘 I hope you’ll join us!
-
As usual, I’m going to treat the list as a sketch-a-day challenge, but we strongly encourage anyone who’s interested to post as (in)frequently as they like, re-post older work, or otherwise participate in whatever way feels best. Interpret the prompts as you like.
-
My sketches will end up being modest, but joining the group to make something bigger than the sum of its parts keeps me excited to try again. Thank-you, friends.

Because outside > inside 🌲

Getting outdoors postpartum with my baby, especially hiking in the mountains, has had a huge positive effect on my mental health and physical recovery.

I feel more like myself out here. I can cope better with the lack of sleep, frustrations, and occasional tedium of the newborn days when I have this to look forward to. My body gets stronger each time I push it up a mountain and my bond with my baby grows deeper carrying him over rocks and trails.

And, even if my son doesn’t remember these days exactly, I hope pieces of them - the smell of the sun-warmed pines, the feel of the brisk mountain breeze, the gentle jostling of being carried uphill, the sound of a hawk calling as it rides the rising air - will nonetheless help shape who he is and what he values as he grows.

I truly believe humans belong outside, nurturing ourselves and our children in nature. I know I’m certainly at my best here.

***

Of course, this is all a result of my immense privilege to have a healthy baby, a smooth postpartum recovery that allows me to babywear and hike, the means and knowledge the access the outdoors, and most of all a safe and peaceful place in which to live. I wish all mothers and babies in the world had these, especially that last one.

Sylvan Briar Carlielle 🌲🍄✨
8lbs 4oz

Sylvan made a late arrival into the world via unplanned, unexpected, very fast but overwhelmingly positive home birth just before the April full moon.

Our family is all doing great, enjoying the newborn snuggles and getting to know the new addition.

new 🐻 bedroom mural for our almost three year old

This was the only art project I’ve had time and energy for in a long time, but it was a big one, so I think that counts as several small paintings.

I learned a lot about mural-ing from the first one I did a few years ago and I’m really happy with how this turned out. I used two @behrpaint colours in a flat finish, Carraway Seed and Nocturne Blue, to mix my own colours for each mountain layer.

Leon has already named the bear family (Sky, Scout, Amber, and Magnus, after the main characters featured in the Disney Nature bear movie) and can’t wait to move into his new “big kid bear room”. I love being able to give him this special wall mural to make him feel at home in a new space - especially with a little sibling arriving to disrupt things very soon!
