Ukrainian artist and curator Lucy Nychai joined our Amplifying Ukrainian Voices weekend in the Scottish Borders, a collaboration between JST and Voices Gloucester, to lead a workshop on self-storytelling. We explored the stories that shape who we are, alongside a meditative embroidery practice that gave space to reflect. Each participant created their own personal pattern, and we then stitched them all together: identity meeting belonging.

Lucy drew on toloka, the Ukrainian tradition of people coming together to work towards a shared goal:

“It’s a very powerful thing for the feeling of community. Working together like this is what brings people to a sense of community.”

Thank you, Lucy, for this workshop that helped us see our stories as a source of strength.

Lucy Nychai: producer of APOSTAXIS in UA

Lucy Nychai is an artist, researcher and curator whose work explores memory, identity, and social and environmental justice. Her practice spans physical presentations and digital experiences, as well as participatory art and local contexts. Alongside this, she researches international art residency practices and their impact on local and global ecosystems.

Lucy is a co-founder and project coordinator of the Congress of Cultural Activists, and also a co-founder and curator of the Nazar Voitovych Art Residency (NVAIR), where the Ukrainian part of the APOSTAXIS residency is currently taking place. In addition, she produces the Ukrainian part of the ASSEMBLE project. She curated (Re)Grounding (2022 to 2024), which was co-produced by D6:EU, IZOLYATSIA and D6: Culture in Transit, and from 2023 to 2026 she was an associate curator at D6: Culture in Transit.
For Lucy, the central question of APOSTAXIS is how cultural heritage and traditions help people preserve their identity and begin a new life after forced displacement.

“I see my task as creating a space for reflection on the artistic statements the artists will shape as they research past and present experiences of forced resettlement, which are the focus of this programme. Above all, we are looking for the strength that is born in difficult circumstances.”

APOSTAXIS is a transnational art residency and exhibition project developed in partnership between D6:EU and the Congress of Cultural Activists (CoCA). It brings together artists with experience of displacement for residencies in Ukraine and Cyprus.

The project APOSTAXIS is implemented in the framework of ZMINA: Resilience, a cooperation between IZOLYATSIA (UA), Malý Berlín (SK) with support of Trans Europe Halles (SE).

Co-funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA). Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them

PRACTICES OF PRESENCE. OPEN CALL
FOR UKRAINIAN FEMALE ARTISTS

Deadline EXTENDED:
22 september 2026

A curatorial project by Maria Proshkovska (@proshkowska) on the New Ecology of Coexistence, within the international cultural project ASSEMBLE

Within this curatorial project, Maria Proshkovska invites Ukrainian women artists who left Ukraine after the beginning of the full-scale invasion and have since returned to rethink this shared experience and work together on a joint project. “Practices of Presence” unfolds in three parts: I. Conflict. II. Displacement. III. Environment.

“I proceed from the conviction that artistic practice can be not only a way of representing war or crisis, but also an instrument for producing new knowledge and new models of coexistence. Art becomes a space in which we not only record the consequences of destruction, but also learn to rebuild relationships between people, nature, memory and place.” — Maria Proshkovska

Each selected artist will receive an artist fee of €500, as well as a production budget of €500 for the development and realization of their work.

The project will unfold collaboratively throughout 2026 and 2027, creating a space for exchange, dialogue, and the development of individual and collective artistic practices. The final project will be presented through online and offline exhibitions.

Extended deadline: 22 September 2026

Please note: You may apply in Ukrainian or in English. If you have any questions, contact in advance assemble.ukraine@gmail.com for individual feedback.

Congress of Cultural Activists (CoCA), founded on Euromaidan in 2014, CoCA brings together artists, filmmakers, architects, educators and policy advocates united by the belief that culture is a driver of social change.

The Congress of Cultural Activists works at the intersection of cultural activism, artistic practices, education, cultural policy, and international cooperation.

The organization’s main areas of activity include art mobility and residency programs for artists and cultural managers, non-formal education and research, visual and audiovisual projects, and advocacy for change in the cultural sphere.

For the Congress NGO, culture is not only a sphere of creative production, but also a tool for social interaction, community development, restoration of dignity, and the formation of new approaches to cultural policy. That is why the organization combines practical work with communities, support for artists, international partnerships, and public debate on the role of culture in the transformation of Ukraine.

Their main programme, NVAIR - a Ukrainian art residency in Ternopil - supports young Ukrainian artists through exchanges with international institutions.
