I wanted to save this very important work in progress for my last post of #BlackHistoryMonth This image of Dr. King serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities inherent in discussions about firearms and civil rights and it stirs emotion around the hypocrisy of violence in Christianity.

In a society where the exaltation of gun ownership persists, it's essential to confront the historical realities faced by black Americans, including the denial of basic human dignity and rights. Dr. King's own application for a gun permit underscores this point—denied by authorities who deemed him "unsuitable" solely based on his race. This stark contrast between the glorification of gun ownership and the systemic denial of rights is laid bare, challenging us to interrogate who gets to determine who can bear arms.

The hypocrisy becomes apparent when we consider the reaction to Dr. King's hypothetical possession of a firearm. If it's deemed unacceptable for him, why should it be acceptable for anyone else? This hypocrisy is further underscored by historical events such as the Mulford Act, which targeted black activists like the Black Panthers, revealing the complicity of figures like Ronald Reagan and the NRA in restricting gun rights for marginalized communities.

The imagery of Dr. King wielding a firearm serves as a powerful indictment of the selective memory surrounding his legacy. Too often, his arrests and the systemic injustices he faced are sanitized, allowing for a convenient, anachronistic narrative that ignores his radical activism and opposition to violence in all its forms.

In a letter from prisoner 7089, Dr. King's words—"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"—ring true. The sanitization of his legacy and the selective focus on his "I Have a Dream" speech while ignoring his later critiques of systemic injustice perpetuates a false narrative.

"Love bites" by @lufreddy77 - Available on @makersplaceco
