SEPTEMBER - we lost a good Prius this month but the rest was lively and friend-filled. Climbing Baldy was DIFFICULT but I felt proud afterwards, much like a lot of lessons these days!! 🕊️💪🥹

5 years ago today (sept 27th, 2021) i was hospitalized for a skating related traumatic brain injury that nearly took my life. i was put into emergency surgery to relieve the swelling, followed by a week in a coma and 8 months with part of my skull missing.
.
while i survived the initial injury, the following months and years were incredibly challenging. I couldn’t speak well and had to relearn english word by word. I had to wear this ugly plastic helmet at all times to protect the exposed part of my skull. It was painful, unpleasant, challenging, frustrating beyond measure… but I never lost hope that I could recover fully. And I miraculously did.
.
Pictured here is a set of photos that were taken early December that year, just two months after coming home from the hospital. The 10” crater in my skull is clearly visible. After 5 years, I’m finally ready to share these pictures, something I’ve been nervous about doing publicly, but here we are.
.
The courage comes from one of my very good friend Dylan Lloyd @luh_lloyd who spent countless months documenting a large portion of my recovery. His short documentary titled “Piece of Mind” is out now. If you would like to learn more about my story, please give it a watch. 🫶 >>Link in my bio<<

Thank you to my family, friends, my therapy team, the surgeons, @kzsc , and everyone who supported me through this whole ordeal. I am incredibly thankful to have made it out the other end with a second chance at life. Moral of the story is. “Wear a damn helmet!” ❤️‍🩹🫶

Make sure you go check out our Jurassic World episode from @unistudios of Good Mythical Morning! I had a ton of fun directing this one…and yes I rode in the wettest part of the boat the most and it took me hours to dry after the shoot.

The biggest challenge for this shoot was selecting and testing the camera rigs we would take on the ride. We needed a small camera that could safely secure to us so it didn’t fall off during the ride. I ended up selecting three iPhone 17 Pros and shooting ProRes RAW, which was a first for me. After a few long days of research and testing, we went out to shoot it! Thanks to Morgan and @randalljknox for ensuring our rigs were safe to the Universal Park engineers’ standards. @khitchan and @luh_lloyd did a great job as always capturing the chaos! They built the FX6s in record time for the non-ride portions of the segment on top of riding Jurassic World over and over again!

A fun fact about me…I made my first “on the ride experience” YouTube video with my friend in 2011 on the iPhone 4 when we were at Disney World for a band trip…and wow the technology and I have come a long way!

This past March was a really special. It marked 1 year of cancer treatment, turning 27, and really taking a long & substantial time to reflect on the year, and how lucky I am to have such wonderful people in my life.

A year ago, my doctors had no prognosis, and we weren’t even sure how much time I might have. It was a surreal and numbing moment I can still vividly remember.

I wish I could go back and give that Sam a prolonged hug and tell him how strong he would be, and how his entire community would be there every step of the way. Most days I’m honestly pretty happy. I’ve tried to live each day to the fullest and tell my friends and family I love them literally every moment I get. Not in remission yet, but making some stellar progress! Chemo freaking sucks but, the reduction of my cancer makes me feel so GREAT!!!

Nowadays I feel like I get overwhelmed pretty easily so I tried to just compile some pics from March that sit close to my heart and POST.

Thanks for all the bday wishes, I’m so sorry if I haven’t responded yet😭🫶🏼 I can’t express how lucky I am to have so much support and love present in my life.
