Regalito de cumpleaños 🎈Honored that the islotes series is part of the new Balam issue no.12 titled “Sirenas del Caribe” alongside many brilliant Latinx artists 🧜‍♀️🌊 @revistabalam Thank you to curators Carlos Martiel & Luis Alberto Juárez for including me (and Mami, Abuela, Shay, Papi y las tías) in such a beautiful and tender publication @martielcarlos @luis_jua 🌞✨ (Image description on Alt Text) #RevistaBalam #SirenasDelCaribe #islotes Spread on Balam issue no.12 On the left, islotes (the sand bears witness; Abuela Monse at the Vega Baja beach), 2024 Archival family photograph of an older lady in front of the beach. The photograph is slightly discolored due to time passage and has some small details of paper creasing at the top right of the image. She is wearing a white head turban, a white sweater around her shoulders, a chekered dress, and black shoes slowly sinking in the sand. Behind the shore and the water there is a mountain, and above is the clear blue sky. Her body is covered with a thin layer of sand, creating some abstraction while still being somewhat legible. The sand creates a ghostly effect on the photograph. On the right, islotes (la muchachita Ramos; Mami's 6th grade photo), 2024 Archival family photograph of a young girl's school portrait. The photo is black and white, with some sepia tones as an effect of time passage, and has a white rectangular with radious inner border. She has short length black hair, and she's weaing a white sleeveless shirt. She's in front of a white backdrop, with some details of black and gray around her. Her body is covered with a thin layer of sand, creating some abstraction while still being somewhat legible. The sand creates a ghostly effect on the photograph.

On view in our gallery now: Becoming Of Flesh by Robert Flynt & Ash Allen @soft_shvde @robertflyntfoto On view through September 7, with a limited-edition publication edited by @luis_jua published by @ets.riso & printed by @clubdelprado Becoming is not a spontaneous act, but a process of sedimentation and transit. For the body to achieve transformation, it must first pass through various experiences, invocations, and awakenings; it must be inhabited by the question before the answer. Just as human anatomy allows us to understand the basic organization of matter, here the body, in order to become, requires a relational bond that leads him to ecstasy and to the very essence of that mutation. This dialogue does not happen by chance; it is a technical and spiritual dialogue, a result of the endeavor of Robert Flynt and Ash Allen to transmit what happens inside a body and then expel it as vibrations of light. In this journey, it is vital to distinguish the phenomenon, as the legendary faggot Néstor Perlongher would say: while hallucinations are a purely individual event, a narcissistic and untransmissible refuge that serves as a support for no message, the vision possesses a collective, almost sacred support. There is a common code here that allows for the exchange of experiences between both works, situated in different contexts, yet united by the same tactile frequency. Flynt operates as an anatomist of the penumbra; Since 1985, he has established an intimate relationship with the solarized image, the darkroom, the juxtaposition, and the negative to transform his creatures into an expansion of the body that defies the limits of the skin. Allen continues this trajectory, by persisting on the male body as a territory of exploration through light and cyanotype. What lies behind this great obsession is the insistence in stripping away every pre-established category of how to be a man. The difficulty of any shared encounter is linked, precisely, to the dissolution of the “j”, to that surrender where identity gives way to potency.

Featuring more than 20 contributors and photographers, this edition offers an errant and polyphonic perspective that, drawing on Édouard Glissant’s concept of “Relation,” embraces the multiplicity, creolization, and fluidity of Caribbean identities. June is over and I complete twelve months or a year as Director of the Graduate Program and ISLAA Fellow in Latin American Art at CCS Bard. I pinch myself often to confirm this is my real life, although it would be unfair to claim it is not also fantasy, since this is for sure the job of my dreams. I’m so happy and so grateful for all the challenges and lessons this place and its people have sent my way. This carrousel doesn’t do justice to the joy, the love, the toil, the exhaustion, the blessings and the wonderful people I’ve come to know throughout the year but should count as a big thank you and shout out to everybody and everything I’ve encountered along the way ❤️‍🔥
