Should a poet see The Odyssey?

Or has every poet already lost themselves for twenty years upon the wine dark sea while their soulmate unsticks a loom of love at midnight awaiting our return?

Love to see and share poets around the world contemplating and processing anew one of the ancient great epic poems.

Worth it to see the film?

A huge thank you to the incredible organising team at @whitsundayvoices, every volunteer (especially the Year 11 helpers!), the wonderful students from far and wide, and all the parents who made me feel so welcome.

It was an absolute joy to spend time with so many imaginative young readers, doodlers, and creators. Thank you for having me. I miss you all already!

Special thanks to Liz Russell for the invitation and for bringing together such a magical festival. It was a privilege to be part of it.

Photos courtesy of the festival and a few student legends! 😉

This term, our Year 12s were inspired by Brisbane poet Luka Lesson, who performed poems about justice, family, and his Greek heritage.

A student favourite was his performance of ‘Yiayia’, a poem about his grandmother. Luka encouraged everyone to find their own voice, closing with powerful performances of ‘Antidote’ and ‘May Your Pen Grace the Page’.

“…"Live by the word, die by the word"
Which also means - Live by the sword, die by the sword.
Because your tongue is the Excalibur
stuck in the rock of your mouth.
Most of us spend our whole lives trying to pull it out.”

The 2026 March Madness Poetry Playoffs is two battles in, and gaining traction! @sulibreaks went up against @lukalesson yesterday, with @_dariussimpson taking on @tv_hall today in two incredible battles!

I started this about 6 years ago (again, a huge shout-out to @readitwriteitlearnit and @pennykittle for the inspiration, original content and format of this tournament). Since then, it's morphed, changed, and grown into something bigger and better than I could have imagined. First it was one teacher joining, then the rest of our division; then another school, and now I have 5 schools over two school boards joining us on this poetic journey!

"What is a poem?
A poem is a funny thing
A sticky ball of language
That's tricky on the surface
When you try to understand it."
