A belated ode to the International Mountain Day. “Chimneys” will@be exhibited at Wimbledon Fine Art Gallery next week, so a small selection of my works amongst a wonderfully array of art for Christmas. Torres del Paine is an extraordinary monument of spectacularly beautiful geographical formations. #torresdelpaine #chile #blackandwhitephotography #mountains #internationalmountainday #southamerica #southernhemisphere #extrememountaineering

Luke Smithwick, a seasoned ski mountaineer and alpinist, is currently tackling on the ambitious HIMALAYA 500 project. This initiative involves skiing five hundred lines in the Himalayas, providing him with the opportunity to dive into climate change and mountain culture. With 86 Himalayan expeditions in the last decade, Luke has established himself as one of the most prolific modern-day Himalayists. Based in Victor, Idaho, nestled at the foot of the Tetons, he dedicates time to training between his extraordinary expeditions.
Despite the annual influx of adventurers to the Himalayas, few have completed the range as extensively as Luke, making his ongoing experience truly an inspiration to the mountaineering community.

Namaste Nepal 🇳🇵. Today’s up was a trail run from Fewa Lake up to Sarangkot tagging 1000m vertical uphill an hour pace for a zone 3 interval day today. I took a week and a half off of training after completing my 8th Himalayan (and 96th in the past 13 years) expedition for 2023 last week. Who’s keeping count. Fired up for a large winter of interesting ski projects here in Nepal, over in India, and also Pakistan. Get out there and get your mileage in, these are the days that make your expeditions and weekend projects great. @thehimalaya500 #Nepal8thwonder #Himalaya

Looking forward to this Winter, and clearly a lot of you are as well. This feed is mostly about the Himalaya and Karakoram where I’m focused skiing & climbing for most of the year. There will also be a bit of the Tetons (and some new surprise locations this Winter in North America). Let’s make it a great skiing and winter climbing season. ⚡️🐺

Rocktober. I pursue ski mountaineering & alpinism in the Himalaya. Between expeditions am able to get out for some ice climbing, sport climbing, bouldering and traditional climbing. Most of the training I do for the big mountains is trail running and gym training, however, in the traditional sense climbing and bouldering are also useful parts of a given training week in preparation for the Karakoram and Himalaya. Many if not most Himalayists spend the majority of their year training and living their lives in a given locale before going for a big expedition or two annually.

My life is the opposite. I am on big expeditions all year from February through November in the highest mountains on Earth. I have done this for the past 13 years, completing 95 Himalayan expeditions. This requires a certain fitness and mentality. It is not for everyone but it’s truly what I love. @trangoclimbing #beaclimber 🎥: @pete_takeda ice and mixed climbing in Vail Amphitheater, Colorado 🇺🇸 | @khiyalisharad rock climbing in Kullu, India 🇮🇳

Kullu this evening, the history of this region is traced back more than 2000 years. Ancient. Kullu is known for its apple orchards and deodar cedar forests. Fertile ground. High above, the Himalaya, the abode of snows. A storm is here currently, rain showers here in town and snow high above. I am looking forward to exploring here for skiing over the coming weeks. Before the pandemic I was pursuing here quite a lot, it’s good to be back and see old friends. We go northward into the main Himalaya range Sunday with our skis. Lots of ideas from my previous expeditions, let’s see what conditions this year allow. As always, the weather and the snowpack is the boss. We go with what nature allows. @thehimalaya500 #India

A tiny update, link in bio. Kashmir last month was storms, managing terrain, learning exciting news and seeing friends again after many years. As always, it’s good to be here. #Kashmir #powderskiing #PirPanjal | https://lukesmithwick.com/kashmir-february-2023/

Limestone and the infinite possibilities in the Karakoram. This mountain range is full of mystery, discoveries if you sit quietly and listen long enough, and the ever present choucas (choughs), the acrobats of the wild mountain air. 🐐 @trangoclimbing
