Had a great day visiting @seaweed_city. Check out their urban seaweed nursery on Governor’s Island. Stay tuned for kelp growth and developments next year! . Seaweed is nature’s own climate resiliency infrastructure—it can serve as a renewable, biodegradable, and eco-friendly resource for plastic alternatives, fertilizer, textiles, and more. Growing seaweed through urban aquaculture can promote an ecologically, economically, and culturally productive shoreline, has a smaller carbon footprint than land-based agriculture, and presents an opportunity to engage New Yorkers in farming methods for a sustainable future. - Seaweed City #seaweedcity #aquaculture #governorsisland #kelpnursery #shanmahmud #lukeeddins

✨Shanjana Mahmud’s work centers the water. To her, the ocean is home— unlike the United States, where she lives, and Bangladesh, where she was born. An evermoving non-place, an abyss, the ocean interrogates our notion of belonging and ownership. She collaborates with her life partner, Luke Eddins, on water-based works at Seaweed City. They farm seaweed in NYC for remediation and restoration of our waters, design and install mussel habitats along our seawalls, researching and thinking about the texture and shape mussels like to settle into. They advocate for living shorelines and biophilic materials: what attracts marine life? They dare to materialize in natural spaces that can be observed and noted and leave a place better than it was. Their dialogues are at the intersection of art making, nature-based climate solutions, and advocacy amongst those interested in how we relate to nature and the natural in the face of a climate catastrophe. Shanjana Mahmud was born in Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1983. She received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008 and BFA from Southern Methodist University in 2005. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. @shan.mahmud @lukeeddins @seaweed_city Pictured above are Shanjana Mahmud’s two artwork donations for our #artforgaza fundraiser “Reef_November_2023_a”, Mortar, shells, and ink, 8x5x3 inches, 2023 “Reef_November_2023_b”, Mortar, shells, and ink, 8x5x3 inches, 2023 Lot #45 and #50 on Galabid Silent Auction, link in bio and at bit.ly/artforgaza Starting bid $100, Through June 15th @globalfeministsforpalestine @sawcc Global Feminists for Palestine & SAWCC will officially close our Online Art Auction on June 15th and this is a final push for these beautiful, powerful artworks. 100% of proceeds will be sent directly to Gaza Mutual Aid. Cold days on the water. And conferences. Let’s make New York-New Jersey Estuary cleaner with more wetlands, marshes, and marine and other wildlife habitats. Northeast aquaculture conference looking beyond commercial fishing and shellfish aquaculture as things shift with climate change, more women in the industry and calls for environmental justice (so much work to do here). #nace2024

Kelp Season 3 in Newtown Creek has begun. We reconfigured our array. Prepping involves some metalwork and beautiful knots that I don’t have pictures of. Next time. @lukeeddins 🛶

The Newtown Creek project is one that we've been excited to support since we first heard about it. In 2010 the 3.8 mile area close to Manhattan was declared a superfund site, following over 150 years of pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants being dumped in the water. Lazy Point Farms is proud to partner with the Newtown Creek Alliance, a community-based organization dedicated to protecting the environmental integrity of the region, a goal we share. This dedicated group of volunteers have been experimenting with kelp growing as a way to cleanse the water. To help facilitate the project, we have provided them with spools of kelp spores and other growing gear for the last several years. But using eco-friendly ways to clean the water like growing native species of seaweed is only one piece of the cleanup work. 2022 AWAW EAG winners Shanjana Mahmud and Luke Eddins, who initiated the Newtown Creek project to encourage ecosystem restoration, remediation of highly polluted waters, soft shorelines and promoting public access to water in New York City, are currently giving educational canoe tours about the project. Lazy Point Farms was founded to help kick-start a local kelp industry and to help forge exactly these sorts of relationships between activists and artists like @shan.mahmud and @lukeeddins and local community organizations, so we're thrilled to support the project! With the assistance of expert guides from @north_bk_community_boathouse Mahmud and Eddins will take small groups out on the water in canoes to “go under bridges, pass along bulkheads, rip rap, barges [and] along the way see shorebirds, wild oysters and ribbed mussels” for two hours at a time over the next two weekends. The canoe trips are intended as a hands-on educational information session about water remediation & seaweed restoration allowing visitors to imagine what it would be like to have a healthy creek available for recreational boating & are free but require pre-registration. See link in the bio. #waterremediation #aquaticrestoration #lazypointfarms #newtowncreekproject #AWAW Images courtesy Shanjana Mahmud and Luke Eddins
