Summer photo dump. To balance out a summer intensive unit of CPE as part of my chaplaincy residency I spent time in nature and with the people I love. Oh, I also completed my last class of seminary. Officially have two Masters degrees now. 🙂💚✨

i broke my previous record and read 90 books in 2024! these are the 8 five-star standouts that knocked it out of the park for me. i’ve generally avoided longer (350+) reads, but clearly enjoyed getting swept away in a few larger narratives this year. in fact, The Morning Star may have taken the title as my all-time favorite book! 3 of these were also book club reads — we unfortunately also read some stinkers across my book clubs, but the gift of reading evolving from a solitary endeavor to a source of community has more than made up for that.

my average rating was 3.66 and i finished around 7 books a month. this is the first year in over a decade that my reading skewed -heavily- towards fiction (83%) instead of being closer to a 50/50 split…my brain was tired from seminary & is tired from residency lol. i’m hoping to balance that out a bit more in 2025 and reincorporate more theology again, as well as poetry which also fell off this year.

my 5-star reads from 2023! this year i read 83 books & while many of them great, these were the homeruns for me. although only one was for my ecotheology class, there’s a major throughline here of attending to the grandeur & grace of the natural world as well as the grief over how we’ve failed to steward it as we should.

more broadly, my average rating was a 3.68, down a bit from 3.8 last year. i was pleased to find that i actually read more after graduating from seminary, which makes me hopeful for 2024! audiobooks continued to be a real gamechanger — i especially enjoyed listening while i read along with a physical copy but also making progress while cooking or walking. i also joined two book clubs here in Columbus which have been such a fun addition too.

yesterday i graduated from @pittsburghseminary with my Master’s in Divinity — a degree title that is, even after 3 years of hard work, audacious at best. i was especially proud to be named the valedictorian of my class, although this thankfully did not require a speech given the far more talented homileticians i graduated alongside!

it’s no secret that starting this program in the thick of the pandemic was far outside my initial hopes & expectations, and it sadly made for a lonelier, more challenging experience than i had anticipated. but it has been a gift to experience the community’s slow collective bloom back to life as we’ve reopened & rebuilt, and to get to enjoy some sweet friendships in that unfurling. i am so grateful for the fellowship of my classmates, the kinship of friends, the mentorship of our immensely wise & pastoral faculty, and the scholarship i have been able to engage, explore, & accomplish as a student here.

but above all, i am thankful for the ways God faithfully met me at the highest highs & lowest lows of these 3 years, and all the enlivening ways that they have revealed Godself anew. i will certainly never master the Divine, but these years have helped form me for a lifetime of the continued pursuit of loving God with all my heart, all my soul, & all my mind for all my days still to come.

i’ve got THREE generations of moms in the family to celebrate today! thinking of my sister enjoying her first Mother’s Day with baby Coop, MeMe’s first as a great-grandmother (tho she’s always been a *great* grandmother 😉), & of course my own Mom too! so grateful for each of you and the many different ways you live out what mothering can look like & mean. sad to be missing out on today’s festivities but can’t wait to be an Ohioan again soon and get to be there for all the fun still to come.

“Later, I learned there’s a Spanish word for this: ‘querencia.’ It refers to that place in the ring where the bull feels strongest, safest, where it returns to again and again to renew its strength. It’s the place we’re most comfortable, where we know who we are — where we feel our most authentic selves.” — Mira T. Lee (Everything Here is Beautiful)

grateful i’ll always have Philly as my querencia 🤍
