I took this photo to remind myself of the era we are in - dominated by technology and the bond to our digital devices. We have given everything to technology and the development of artificial intelligence, and now we have a tremendous amount of innovative potential and authority right at our fingertips, but at what expense?

All of our stories, our research, our art, our ideas… all just out there, compiled and archived by these advanced systems. This sure is not the life I imagined as a child and on most days I would say I question the bigger picture and wish things could be much more simple again. Like, 1996 simple but with cool shit from today, you know?

An apartment complex in Okinawa. I couldn’t get over this scene for a while - desolate, but signs of life hiding behind aged walls and washed out red pillars. 🇯🇵

I feel very connected to these moments I had in Okinawa - moments of gratitude and appreciation for the life I am fortunate enough to experience, all tangled up in this body. Why did I go to Okinawa? I wanted to feel something more than I ever have before. Something no human or book or film could ever offer me. A rebirth.

See, during WWII the battle of Okinawa etched itself into stone as one of the bloodiest battles in human history. So bloody that nearly 30% of the island’s civilian population lost their lives - in the most horrific ways possible. In total, it is estimated that nearly 240,000 lives were lost in the battle of Okinawa. As an artist and as someone who once earned the privilege of wearing a military uniform, I feel very deeply on a human level in these situations. Needless to say, this trip completely broke me to my core. The energy I felt around the islands was immense and I left with far more than I hoped for.

The honest reality is that the majority of life has been very difficult for me since I have been back from Japan. I did not go to Japan to visit Tokyo or anywhere in the mainland to be a tourist. I went to Okinawa to bring back a better version of myself, and that is a constant battle.
