"Your CT scan found a lung nodule." Would you know what that means? Lung nodules are common and most of them are not cancer, but not all of them are the same. Notify the provider asap, expect frequent neuro checks, and anticipate administration of dexamethasone, urgent MRI, and possible radiation. ❌ A ➡️ Cold sensitivity is an expected side effect associated with oxaliplatin. Educate the patient about avoiding cold triggers and move on. ❌ C ➡️ Anemia is an expected side effect from some chemotherapies 2/2 myelosuppression. Mild fatigue and tachycardia suggest that the patient is symptomatic and warrants monitoring but this is not urgent. ❌ D ➡️ Tenderness around a port site warrants monitoring, but the absence of edema, drainage or a fever means infection is very unlikely. Chemo prep for session #8 Tomorrow is chemo session #8, which means it’s time for my pre-chemo cocktail: Dexamethasone, a steroid that comes with some lovely side effects. 🙃 For me, it’s facial swelling, insomnia, and being ridiculously emotional. And honestly, the emotional part is the WORST. 😭 The other day, I literally cried because I tore off a piece of cling wrap that was too small to cover my plate. 😂🤦‍♀️ Cancer life… sometimes you fight the big battles, and sometimes the cling wrap wins. 🫠 What’s your worst side effect? Nothing in healthcare fires me up, ignites my passion, fuels my rage, or awakens the dragon in me more than an insurance denial especially when it comes to life-saving cancer medications. Insurance denials are costly because they take up time which is very much an expensive luxury for a cancer patient who has progressed on standard of care treatment. That’s what makes the insurance companies so heartless; to them, patients are literally nothing but numbers, but to us, they are human beings who are suffering as their disease ravages their body. Until insurance companies are prohibited from playing God with our patients’ lives, we will continue to get back in the ring, beaten and bloodied, and put up a hell of a fight, because every patient deserves equal access to healthcare and all its resources. Cancer is hard enough to live with. No one should have to carry the burden of being blamed for it, too. Yet, even today, people believe cancer is a curse, a punishment for past deeds, or the result of bad karma. Some say it to patients’ faces. Others say it behind their backs. And many patients silently carry that guilt, wondering whether they somehow deserve what is happening to them. Imagine navigating a life-changing diagnosis, the uncertainty, the treatment, the physical pain, the financial burden, the fear of the future and then being made to feel that it is somehow your fault. We don’t tell someone with heart disease that they must have committed a sin to deserve it. So why is cancer still treated as a moral failing? Cancer is a disease, not a verdict on someone’s character. As a person living with cancer, I know that surviving it is already enough to carry. Patients deserve compassion, dignity and support not shame, blame or superstition. You don’t have to know someone’s story to treat them with humanity. Cancer is not a curse. Compassion should never be conditional. PS: For context, this is a real incident happened on an official Government of India Instagram post about a metro inauguration. I questioned the use of public money and the political optics of having senior political leaders inaugurate the project. Instead of engaging with the question, people visited my profile and mocked my lung cancer diagnosis. I have edited the original comment to remove the swear word and have not revealed the person’s identity beyond the edited username shown. I have reported the account for hate speech. This post is not about directing hate towards anyone; it is about challenging the stigma that makes people believe cancer is something a person deserves. AI was used for post creation.
