When this show was announced last week, I was excited as you’d expect. Then the news hit about Jake. And there wasn’t a THING i wouldn’t have done to be here for this show. The new stuff is killer, the old stuff still blows the roof off, and since Jake called the show the “weirdest birthday party ever” I’m not gonna wax poetic about how fucking much this band means to me. What I will say, is Hippo Campus, we fucking love you… and Jake, WE FUCKING LOVE YOU AND GET WELL SOON. The minute you’re back, I’m there.

Jake Luppen นักร้องนำและมือกีตาร์วง Hippo Campus เผยว่าตรวจพบเนื้องอกในสมอง เตรียมเข้ารับการผ่าตัดนาน 6 ชั่วโมงในวันที่ 6 พฤศจิกายนนี้ โดยก่อนเข้ารับการผ่าตัด เขาและวงจะขึ้นแสดงด้วยกันอีกครั้งในวันที่ 19 ตุลาคมนี้ ที่ Turf Club ในเมืองเซนต์พอล รัฐมินนิโซตา สหรัฐอเมริกา ซึ่งเป็นบ้านเกิดของวง

Luppen ได้แชร์ภาพสแกนสมองผ่าน Instagram พร้อมเปิดเผยว่า ผล MRI เมื่อ 7 ปีก่อนพบรอยโรคขนาด 9 มิลลิเมตรในสมอง ก่อนที่การตรวจติดตามตามปกติเมื่อช่วงฤดูร้อนที่ผ่านมา จะพบความเป็นไปได้ว่ารอยโรคดังกล่าวมีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้น จึงนำไปสู่การตรวจคลื่นไฟฟ้าสมอง

“ผมไม่คิดมาก่อนเลยว่า อาการแพนิกที่ผมเผชิญอยู่ แท้จริงแล้วเป็นอาการชักเฉพาะที่” เขาเขียน

แพทย์แนะนำให้ Luppen เข้ารับการผ่าตัดเปิดกะโหลกศีรษะ เนื่องจากตำแหน่งของรอยโรคอยู่ใกล้กับ Basal Ganglia ซึ่งเป็นบริเวณสำคัญของสมอง ทำให้การตัดชิ้นเนื้อเพื่อตรวจวินิจฉัยโดยตรงมีความเสี่ยงสูงเกินไป โดยทีมแพทย์สงสัยว่าอาจเป็นเนื้องอกสมองชนิด Glioma ระดับ 2 ซึ่งเป็นเนื้องอกที่เติบโตช้าและมีความรุนแรงต่ำ

“การผ่าตัดเปิดสมองแบบนี้ใช้เวลาประมาณ 6 ชั่วโมง และผมจำเป็นต้องรู้สึกตัวระหว่างการผ่าตัด เพื่อให้ทีมแพทย์สามารถเข้าถึงบริเวณที่ต้องการได้อย่างปลอดภัย พวกเขาจะนำรอยโรคออกให้ได้มากที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ ก่อนส่งเนื้อเยื่อไปตรวจวิเคราะห์ เมื่อทราบแล้วว่ามันคืออะไร เราก็จะรู้ว่าควรรักษาต่อไปอย่างไร” Luppen กล่าว

แม้เจ้าตัวจะยอมรับว่าการผ่าตัดครั้งนี้มีความเสี่ยงที่น่ากังวล แต่ก็มั่นใจว่ามีทีมแพทย์ที่พร้อมดูแลอย่างเต็มที่ โดยหลังจากการแสดงครั้งสุดท้ายกับ Hippo Campus ในวันที่ 19 ตุลาคม เขาคาดว่าจะต้องพักฟื้นเป็นเวลาหลายเดือนก่อนกลับมาเล่นดนตรีได้อีกครั้ง

“ผมจะพยายามอย่างเต็มที่เพื่อกลับขึ้นไปบนเวทีให้เร็วที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ และจะคอยอัปเดตให้ทุกคนทราบตลอดเส้นทางนี้ มันคงเป็นการเดินทางที่ไม่ธรรมดาแน่นอน” เขากล่าว

ทั้งนี้ Hippo Campus ประกอบด้วย Jake Luppen, Nathan Stocker, Whistler Allen, Zach Sutton และ DeCarlo Jackson โดยวงเพิ่งปล่อยอัลบั้มชุดที่ 4 “Flood” เมื่อเดือนกันยายน 2024

Hey everyone - Jake here with a life update.

About seven years ago, a migraine-prompted MRI revealed a 9 mm lesion on my brain, right near my basil ganglia. This past summer a routine scan showed some possible growth in this lesion, which prompted an EEG test - to my surprise, the panic symptoms I had been experiencing were actually focal seizures.

My neurologist and neurosurgeon at Mayo determined that the best route to recovery would require a craniotomy to remove the lesion, as its critical location renders the option for a biopsy to be too dangerous. This kind of open brain surgery lasts for about six hours and requires that I’m awake so that they can safely access what they believe is a stage two glioma (slow growing, low grade brain tumor).

They’ll remove as much of the lesion as possible and then send it off for testing. Once we know what it is, we’ll know how to treat it.

While a medical procedure of this nature carries some scary risks, my family and I couldn’t ask for a better surgical team to perform this surgery, which is scheduled for November 6th.

All that being said, it might be a second before I can play music for y’all again. So, on October 19th we’re playing a show at Turf Club to rage for one last time before I’m on my ass for a few months. Rest assured I will work as hard as I can to get back on stage asap.

I’ll keep y’all updated throughout this journey. Gonna be a wild ride.

These photos mean more than I could ever express. I’m gonna take you on a story… flashback I’m 15-16 still in guitar lessons and my music teacher Carl, showed me a band. He says to me “I think you will like this” that turned out to be the first interaction I’d come across with my future favorite band of all time @thehalocline. Proceeding that eye opening day, I would have my third eye snapped open, by the hometown boys. I only ever played music in my bedroom, but the stories the band told and the love of music felt in each song made me realize THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO DO. Specifically the lead singer of this said band Mr @lupin had stuck out to me, he was a mn kid, brown hair, taller, and liked music, just like me! To say I was inspired by Mr @lupin is an understatement, I felt this kind of freedom through his lyrics, his awesome show outfits, he was the version of what I wanted to be but too nervous to live authenticity. Jake helped me find myself without even knowing me. Fast forward years and years later at @greenroommpls I went for the 3 year anniversary celebration show that was LUPIN with @vlushairlines. This is also important to note because this would introduce some really cool people I had discovered that night that also inspired me. Anyways I’ll try to keep it going here, thank you for sticking with me lol. My lovely girlfriend @saam.mun and I got there very early to secure our front of stage seating, and I mean front row as close as humanly possible. I had that music blasting at us. I floated, I saw what had inspired me online and through videos in person. My hero was standing right there. It was beautiful. After the show we saw @raffaella near the hallway. Mrs. Raff is indie pop royalty and a queen who also is an inspirational artist and human to me. I have a halocline tattoo just like @whistlerisaiah which also has a story for another time but im getting too distracted. Okay okay fast forward we mentioned that earlier Jake said he would kindly sign my tattoo to Mrs. Raff. She very kindly took us near the backstage and that’s where these photos come from. I will leave it at the people who say don’t meet your heroes have not met mine.

Believe me I know plenty of stuff about being weird and I respect the hell out of being normal - we gotta be normal
