Dear Basketball,

The memories you’ve given me, the long nights in the gym, the cries, the laughs, are things I could never repay. You carried me through seasons that tried to break me. When major injuries stole 3 years away, when bad situations kept me off the floor, and now with lupus draining my strength, you still gave me the chance and hope to play at the next level thanks to @ag.bball at San Francisco State, to say that the NCAA was a dream I could have reached is a blessing on its own. But because of these battles, choosing to focus on my growing organization @sleepnation, pivot towards my film passions, and invest in my future is what makes the most sense, even tho saying goodbye feels like losing an old friend who knew every version of me.

We can talk about the losses and pain all day. But we can’t forget how you saved that kid…homeless, living off food stamps and section 8, barely surviving. You gave him somewhere to go when the streets were calling. You gave him four more years at the college level when people said it was over, something only 3% of athletes do. You kept him away from violence and influences that could’ve swallowed him, brought people into his life who became family, showed him places he never imagined, and helped him build something bigger than himself thru this game. I’ll forever be grateful to have been a part of one of the greatest teams in Copper Mountain College history, that brotherhood is something I’ll carry for life.

So instead of being heartbroken the journey didn’t last forever, I’m grateful. Grateful you saved me. Grateful that even in goodbye, you’ve given me one more gift: the chance to save someone else. Thank you for protecting that little boy when the world didn’t.

Thank you old friend, and never goodbye, but see you later.
