Luv Jam has always built worlds rather than just labels. Growing up in North Wales, the landscapes, stories, and odd little pockets of culture around him shaped how he listens and how he creates. That sense of place runs through everything he’s made; from the hand stamped days of Crow Castle Cuts to the myth driven universe of The Legend of Gelert. He brings this world to life through a series of cult vinyl labels, combining folklore inspired artwork, limited pressings, and carefully chosen releases to make music that feels personal and handmade. Through his different aliases and labels, he has built a catalog full of character, curiosity, and a strong passion for physical music culture. A 2018 flashback to the last time we had @recloose in the Sunshine City ahead of his return tomorrow at the cozy and intimate loft-style @suite.e.studios. This open air outside @intermezzocoffee and its reverberations was a catalyst for so much to come in this city, which has undergone so many changes since that it’s almost unrecognizable in some ways. The after party for this night was actually the creation and first use of @sunshinecitydisco’s “Exit Bar” name for the back of @mandarinhide. It was also our first official @movementdetroit pre-party, a tradition we’ve carried on ever since. The building that Intermezzo is in was once the infamous Budious Maximus in the late ‘90s, where talents that would go on to be some of the world’s biggest DJs would play such as @djharveysgeneralstore, @dixon_ (his @sonarkollektiv days), and more. One of these guests included @carlcraignet, whose sandwich order @recloose delivered with a demo that lead to his first release on @planetedetroit. To have him DJ outside of this same building one of his mentors once played felt like a culmination of sorts and a passing of the torch. An avid fan of Detroit, @jamie_palewicz won the giveaway that year, which was an Easter egg style hunt as it was around this time almost a decade ago. That was the only one we did an active participation style giveaway because we realized how dedicated the tried and true heads were — Jamie certainly earned her win plus no kids were harmed in the hunt 😅 — and wanted to spread the love in a more random fashion to give opportunities to people that have maybe never been to Detroit. This weekend’s official @movementdetroit pre-party is a bit of a full circle moment for us, so we thought it might serve as a good opportunity to reflect. We’ve been holding down this Sunshine City meets Motor City annual tradition since 2018, beginning with this Friday’s special guest, @recloose outside @intermezzocoffee — which was also when everyone fell in love with @luv_nipp (this poster being a design collaboration between him and @avbleek). The cheeky April fools afterparty we threw together for that was the first instance of the infamous Exit Bar, “winner of the late night tiny patio party” according to @brokensocialscene, who popped over after we made so much noise we interrupted their show next door at @jannuslive and they wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The retrospection of posters here tell a tale of our true to the underground, no hype ethos, bringing a range of talents from the D through: @kaialce and the late @mikehuckaby313 in 2019 in the @kozubadistillery courtyard; @dj_stingray_313 at @morphnightclub in 2020; a two year pandemic hiatus; our return with @keithworthy_aestheticaudio alongside next generation talents from NYC (originally Tampa) and DC in @toribious_monk and @kaylasouldc in 2022; @ladymonixx in 2023 inside “the box,” which was what we called the experience when we turned @waywardwalls one-of-kind space into a dance club on a couple of occasions; @whodat_detroit in the speakeasy at @thefactorystpete in 2024; and finally @discointelpro last year at @suite.e.studios alongside @rat_galactic. It also captures the evolving landscape of the city, roaming from open airs with a market to our first dance music dedicated nightclub, back to pop ups and finally in our new loft style home — moving from the Edge District further into the Warehouse Arts District. Never downtown proper. During this time, and even before it, we established a strong connection between the cities and, more broadly, across the Sunshine State.
