For our newest cover story, ELLE Decor A-List designer @michaelsmithinc takes us inside the private spaces within the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side. Chosen by the Obamas as their White House decorator in 2008, Smith brought years of shared history to the project—and plenty of personal touches. Hawaiian koa wood connects to the former president’s childhood, contemporary art recalls their White House years, and furnishings showcase artists and craftspeople, many of them Chicago-based.

“Respect, respect.”

That is how founder Laura Sartori Rimini describes Studio Peregalli Sartori’s approach to this 16th-century Venetian palazzo on the Grand Canal to me when I interviewed her earlier this summer. It is also the only sensible way to approach a home with faded frescoes, original terrazzo floors, light-worn silk walls, and a small chapel tucked among its rooms. The firm restored what was there, working carefully around the evidence of five centuries.

Still, it is a home. The owner cooks, hosts dinners, plays the Steinway in the portego, screens movies for friends, and has breakfast at a little table looking out over the canal. I loved writing this story, one of two covers of @elledecor’s new issue. What @elisalipskykarasz and the team are creating is so excellent and exciting. ☀️🌊🛻 Summer ’26 was top tier. From April to August we went from Michigan to Miami to Mexico, from Bridgehampton to Boston and all the way to Turks and Caicos, then road tripped back to Ann Arbor for your sophomore year. ☀️🌊🛻

🏈🎾🏀 Sadie, you had an incredible internship at @espn and @espnw, took two journeys up to your home away from home @raquettelakecampsofficial, traveled back and forth to your new home @uofmichigan and did so many @solidcore classes that they dedicated a “send off shakes for Sadie” class to you!

🐕‍🦺 🦮 You reunited with Wonton and welcomed our new puppy Tobiko to our family (and launched @tobyandtons), celebrated grandpa’s 80th birthday and we said so many college send offs to friends and family this summer. Through all of it, the one constant was your smile.

💞 You are the sweetest soul we know, quick with a hug and quicker to make everyone around you feel loved. You are whip smart, curious, always asking the right questions and somehow always finding the answers. Your energy, your light, may you carry it with you always and share it with the world, the way you share it with us every single day. You are one of a kind with a wicked sense of humor, you show up as yourself and give 100 percent. You are a loyal friend, unwavering, fiercely kind, and endlessly full of heart.

💙💛 You are, simply put, everything good in this world wrapped into one person. We are so proud to be your parents. Happy sophomore year!

In July, I spent a day in East Hampton with an @elledecor crew at @katiecouric’s sunny, inviting, wonderful house. She not only welcomed us all in to take pictures (and fed me a delicious salad made from kale she’d grown herself) but walked me through every room, telling me the stories behind beloved antiques and family heirlooms. And these were proper anecdotes—not just “oh this came from my parents’ living room.” She told me lovingly about her father and his passion for journalism; of her mother’s family history. She has many of the things she collected with her first husband Jay. She told me about her daughters and her grandchildren and her favorite interviews over the years. She told us the stories behind every letter and telegram and picture in her office full of memorabilia—it was like a mini-seminar on the history of TV journalism. She’s funny and self-deprecating without indulging in false modesty or pretending she doesn’t know how amazing her career has been. She really really loves her garden—I don’t think I’ve ever met someone as enamored of hydrangeas. Anyone who has watched Katie over the years (which, let’s face it, is an audience of tens of millions) will recognize this generous, expansive, gregarious person whose enthusiasm is instinctive and unguarded. If you ever get an invite to chez Katie, I highly recommend you accept! (You can read all about her house over at Elle Decor or swipe through for a few of my favorite things.)

What a week, what a launch! 🚀

9 days in NYC seeing old friends, new friends, old doors, new doors....

Coming to NYC solo, launching @dimwitworld was hands down the scariest thing I've ever done. So many moments spent overwhelmed on the verge of panic and tears wishing @ikeafterall and my kids were with me, to ground me...but it was exactly how they say it will be -- nothing worth it, is easy...and I know this lesson will 💫 back again....But today, in this moment, I'm so grateful for all the help and support to get me HERE. My people, cheering me on, buoying me. I'm so grateful.

And to a wonderful week spent meeting new friends, seeing old friends and introducing the world to Dimwit -- Thank you thank you @afternoonlight and @hellohuman.us for an A++ launch!!

The absolute cherry on top was hiring @kaimackenzie__ @liemackenzie and seeing the boys I once watched play with my kids in front of our houses, build something beautiful and deliver it with absolute professionalism and love -- it cracked my heart wide open. Proud neighbor-mom moment and the kids are alright.

This new acquisition “Townie 2” from Chicago-based artist @danadeano is heading straight to the framers. Dana is known for her intricate mixed-media drawings combining traditional and non-traditional materials to create textured and abstracted landscapes. This piece is one of sixteen works created recently during a magical three week residency in Lakeside, Michigan. Reach out to see more of Dana’s exquisite work.
