Do you believe wellness is incorporated into your cooking?
Marsha: “Definitely - it’s always a good stress reliever and a way to take a break from studying to keep me sane. Especially with quarantine, I tried to cook and bake things I never had time for while we were in school. I learned A LOT of patience by making my own sourdough starter, but it was worth it in the end and it made a great avocado toast.”

Ryan: “I try to get creative at making meals that taste really good but are healthy at the same time - we’ll either add more vegetables or incorporate healthy alternatives for the “unhealthier” ingredients. So far, we’ve made things like low carb zucchini ravioli with a tofu basil ricotta, turkey bolognese, and even with this Jon and Vinny’s inspired dish - we substituted regular fusilli for Trader Joe’s quinoa fusili.”

Where's your favorite place to dine or food shop at, and why?
Ryan: “Thank me later: Superking. At least for produce - I’ve filled my shopping cart before and spent less than $80. I also like Costco, Aldi, but most of all Trader Joe’s - cured meats, smoked dutch gouda, toscano soaked syruh for charcuterie, crispy crunchy okra, seasoned kale chips, chili and lime rolled corn chips, dark chocolate covered pb cups and almonds.”

Marsha: “I love exploring out of the Pomona/Chino Hills/Claremont area and going to Santa Monica, Koreatown, DTLA - some good date spots/fav places since moving here have been Felix Trattoria, Élephante, Raffi’s Place, Malibu Farm, The Standard Rooftop, Porto’s Bakery, Tsujita, Kazu Nori, and Sushi Fumi…even Howlin’ Rays!!! Our next spot on the list is Nobu in Malibu, but for brunch! It’s been fun to keep a bucket list of places and check off the restaurants as we go.”

Happy Wellness Wednesday! We are privileged to feature @lyfeofmarsh ‘s dad, Dr. Mirle Girish, for today’s #FamilySpotlight. He is a Pulmonologist.

As a pulmonologist, describe your experience being in the Covid front lines?
“Well for starters, I’ve had to start wearing scrubs for the first time since my residency days – I normally wear a suit to work! In all seriousness, it’s been scary. I myself have asthma and it’s always in the back of my mind that I have the chance of carrying the virus back home and infecting my family. But it’s a risk I have to take to care for my patients. It’s also heartbreaking because the families can’t be there with our patients currently. My nurses who take care of my patients when I’m not there are my heroes, they’re always by their sides. I recently had a patient who passed away from COVID-19 and they arranged for the patient to facetime his family in his last moments to say goodbye.”

Has your life experience changed with the non-extension of the stay-at-home order and re-opening of businesses in Tennessee since May 1?
“I think since everything has started to open people are still taking precautions, which is good, and it should stay that way for a while. Especially with our younger population, if bars start to open again I dont know what to expect. My first patient with the virus was 22 and she recovered quickly, but there’s no way to tell if this virus will mutate over time.”

Any words of wisdom or hope you would like to mention during this time?
“HYGIENE. HYGIENE. HYGIENE. This should be an eye opening experience for everyone, healthy or not, that we should be proactive about taking care of ourselves in all aspects. My patient who passed away was 55, his underlying health issue was that he was obese. Of course, number one is always to remember to wash your hands – at least 20 seconds. But also remember to: 1) eat healthy, 2) take your vitamin C and zinc, 3) stay active, 4) stay socially distant for the time being and 5) stay hopeful. We will get through this.”
