Some people collect furniture. I collect the feeling a space gives me. If it says “buonasera, benvenuto”, it usually ends up in my sketchbook. ✨

~A GRATEFUL HEART~

There are still spaces available for this session delivered by Emily Lyons, (@plymouth.reg ),collage artist Agnieszka Zając (MA) and Martin Jared-Davis( @communitybuildermens and Director of @plymouth_pride CIC).

With the constant exposure to negative messages in the media, it’s no surprise that many LGBTQ+ individuals feel overwhelmed and disconnected from their sense of worth. In this workshop, we’ll explore how to separate our personal identity from external expectations and opinions and focus on appreciating ourselves and the positive aspects of our lives. When society devalues our identity, it can lead to internalised shame and low self-worth, making it difficult to recognise our achievements. It’s crucial to resist these messages and not accept them as our truth so we can instead see the value we bring to the world. Gratitude is a powerful tool to counteract negativity and boost mental wellbeing. By appreciating small joys—like a sunny day and fresh air , we shift our focus from what we lack to what we have.

In her "Collage Care book" (TM), Laurie Kanyer @lauriekanyer offers a quite unique and powerful exercise to cultivate gratitude. She defines gratitude as a state of thankfulness, a willingness to appreciate kindness, and reciprocate it. Gratitude, she reminds us, is a mindset, an attitude, and perhaps even a life philosophy. It's more than a fleeting emotion - it's a transformative tool. By focusing on life's positives, we can shift our perspective, diminish negativity, improve our overall well-being.

Collage Care (tm) is not about creating fine art but using images to express our reflections and feelings. No artistic experience is needed—just curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to experiment. You’ll leave feeling centred and empowered with a meaningful visual reminder of your strength.

This session is guided by @_agazart_ using Collage Care The Method™ written ad developed by Laurie Kanyer @lauriekanyer (MA). For workshop information and bookings- please visit @plymouth.reg

I am sharing a few images from our recent session on perfectionism, based on Collage Care: The Method™, created by @lauriekanyer that I delivered with @lyonsathome for @plymouth.reg .

Her thoughtful and gentle approach brings together mini-lectures, guided collage-making, personal reflection, meditation, breathwork and some somatic practices.

During the session, we explored the roots, effects and different types of perfectionism, along with healthy, mindful ways to overcome it. We learned that perfectionism can negatively impact mental health by causing ongoing stress and anxiety as we try to meet unrealistic standards. It often leads to fear of failure, low self-esteem, burnout, and procrastination. Perfectionism also makes it difficult to accept mistakes and learn from them, keeping us stuck in negative thinking.

To help balance this, we shared ideas like changing negative thoughts, setting kinder and more realistic goals, practicing self-compassion and creating healthier boundaries with others. Using collage art and a playful mindset, we gave ourselves permission to experiment and just see what happens—which felt really freeing. We tried two exercises—one focused on perfectionism and another on allowing ourselves to play.

Laurie teaches us, that collage art, especially when we don’t take it too seriously, can be a great way to work through perfectionism. It encourages us to be creative and try new things without worrying about getting everything perfect. Focusing on the process, rather than the final outcome, helps us be okay with mistakes and surprises. Playing with art also helps reduce self-criticism and sparks curiosity and kindness toward ourselves—things that really support mental health.

Thank you to everyone who made this session special and to @plymouth.reg for inviting me to co-host this workshop.
