This Juneteenth I had the opportunity to present an all black queer art exhibition called “GAZE”. As a black queer artist myself it felt exciting to be able to work with artists in my direct community!

This show so far has been my biggest accomplishment during my time as the Exhibitions Manager at @thebakeryatlanta . One of my biggest goals is to bring new and diverse perspective into the space. I can only hope to continue to carve out opportunities for artists such as those featured in “GAZE”.

Thank you to all the artists who participated! Yall truly created such a beautiful space that I could not have envisioned any better.

The grand opening party. First of all… thank you. 🫠
I feel like I’ve achieved most of the dreams, I once whispered to myself when this was just an idea.

In less than a week, we moved into a ginormous space in Grant Park that I ALWAYS wanted & we don’t regret it. Not for a second. We never will.

I’ve never been a quiet person. I’ve ALWAYS had something to say : just ask my team. I’m opinionated. I’m passionate. I love doing hair. I love making people feel sexy…. But I also know what it feels like to not fit in.

I was sick of working at salons that didn’t care about hair. Being enveloped by something that’s so personal & moving. Captivating. Connecting with people’s identity. Trying so hard all the time was a constant reminder that I was different. Late nights staring at the ceiling craving change for our craft.
I have so much to be grateful for.

Forté changed everything.
This year… we did THAT MF thing. @fortehairatl
I found the strength & the confidence to be honest about who I am, because I am that bitch since 2021.

Fear is powerful, but love is more powerful. Love makes you better. 💚
Forté makes me better.
Look better. Feel better. Show up better.
A year ago, fuck, even six months ago, we wouldn’t have believed this. Forté feels like a revolution.
Replaying the last few years in my head while dreaming about the future… I’m overwhelmed with pride. 🌈

I’m so proud of my staff. So proud of what WE built.
And honestly? I’m glad the setup & now I get to show up harder & stronger than ever.

We love taking care of our people. We love showing up for this community + now we get to do that every single day.
With a team this great, there’s no second guessing. I made the right choice. Over & over again.
Forté forever.

Dear friends! I waited too long to let this idea live. It’s part mission, part passion, part therapy.

The @yearslaterpodcast is my response to five years of processing what happened to all of us after 2020.

We all have baggage and stories chasing us after our routines, surroundings and priorities changed.

-I left New York City and somehow managed to get closer to my work.

-I took the time to process the things I was not good at, and realized that maybe I spent decades adapting to my fears rather than beating them.

-I shared what felt like stolen time with loved ones, and prioritized them during a whimsical period of time.

-Pants became a rare occurrence and shorts were the ultimate uniform.

-I traded being the person who always missed things for work, and became the uncle and son always there for his loved ones.

-I gained a brother – that was huge – and lost some who felt like forever family.

-I, most importantly, spent many, many hours in my car, or on a walk, chatting with my therapist about what was happening. “This is change,” I finally realized, “and, this time, we are all on the ride together.”

We handled it in all kinds of ways and I want to make sure those stories are preserved.

So I am starting out sharing my huge moments and big shifts, in English and Spanish.

I hope they lay a good foundation for a space where others can open up about their journeys.

I haven’t seen many of you in person since the big pandemic news. That’s half a decade already.

Some of you, I never expected to see much between 2020 and 2025, yet life gave us valuable, unexpected time together.

Let’s celebrate by remembering what happened all those years later.

-Luis
