The 2 millionth Self-Portrait taken using our two-way mirror system was snapped at @shimshamla in Los Angeles by @bbyquail during a going-away party for a friend on June 3, 2026.

It took almost 14 years to hit the Self-Portrait Project’s 1 millionth photo; it took just 3 years and 4 months to reach the 2 million mark.

In a world where imagery is both ephemeral & omnipresent, each of these two million images (and counting) taken over the last 17 years isn’t simply a disposable digital file, but rather an interaction suspended in time, anchoring a memory which allows those in the know to travel back to a moment at will and to perhaps relive a certain story. We call our archive a "living archive" because it is participant-authored, ever-expanding, and reflects different faces in it every single day. To those who have participated, thank you! And to those who have not yet done so -- we hope to see you soon.
