THE BLEEDING TREE / NIDA @nidacommunity

It’s been such a special thing to return to NIDA to direct Angus Cerini’s masterpiece with the next gen of artists. Knockout performances by Zarah Stibbard, Rashie Kase and Ooen-s’tae Johnson, lending their hearts and souls to this complex and devastatingly timely work, and brilliantly supported by the design creatives, assistant directors, stage management and production teams.

Last week we opened my show Birdsong of Tomorrow.

It’s sold out which is BONKERS, but we’ve just this afternoon added an extra week, so if you’re looking for tickets get to it - there’ll also be limited $25 Tuesday Rush tickets on sale each Tuesday for that night’s performance.

From here this post is emotional gushing so if that’s not for you, keep scrolling pardner.

I am so full of love and gratitude to all the people who’ve been part of this project, from the creative team who’ve gone on a real journey with me and made something that feels really meaningful to us, to the people who’ve encouraged and supported, who’ve read messy drafts and gone for walks.

To Emma, who has put so much into this and met me with trust, with care, who has pushed me and taken big leaps of faith with me.

To Tom, Troy, Clare, Saint and Solomon who have created a space that feels so alive with feeling and memory and wonder.

To Mads, who has shepherded us through chaos and timeblindness, who is unbelievably encouraging and generous and caring and clever.

To Declan and the team at Griffin, and the teams at The Old Fitz and Merrigong for believing in this work and supporting it.

To Jake, Joe and Karl, for making the best band in the world. To Adam and DJY (plus Jack and Elliot) for making the best pod in the world.

To the birdwatchers who’ve welcomed me in, taken me on walks, pointed things out, showed me how to identify different species of egret.

To so many other friends, many of whom have made their way into the show, who have helped and encouraged and hypes and read many drafts that weren’t quite there.

To Rachel, who has heard countless moments of doubt and stress, who has been patient and nurturing and made me feel like this was possible.

And to Andrew, for the kind of friendship I hope we all get to have.

Making work that feels meaningful with people that you care about is the best thing in the world. It absolutely rules that we get to share stories, and we get to hold the people and things that are important to us in stories. Hell yeah.
