Living peacefully ✞

Today, we had to say goodbye to our sweet Gaston.

I don’t know how to put into words what this dog has meant to me because “he was just a dog” has never come close to the truth.

We brought him home when he was just eight weeks old. Since then, he has been there for every chapter of our lives. He watched our children grow up. He followed us through military moves that took us across the country. No matter where home was, he made it feel like home.

He has been my shadow, my comfort, and one of the greatest constants in a life that has often changed. Through celebrations, heartbreak, deployments, new beginnings, and ordinary days, Gaston was always there.

If you knew him, you knew his gentle heart. In ten years, he never showed an ounce of aggression. He loved people. He loved his family. He simply wanted to be close to those he loved. His loyalty never wavered.

Over these past weeks, I’ve watched the dog I love struggle to do the things that once came so easily. Walking became painful. His body began to fail him. Today, we chose to give him the one final gift we could. A peaceful goodbye before his suffering became any greater. Vet told us today that he had fluid on his heart and lungs. So doing this today was the right decision.

People often say we rescue dogs, but the truth is they rescue us too. Gaston has carried pieces of my heart for the last decade. I honestly don’t know what life looks like without him waiting at the door, lying beside me, or simply being part of our everyday moments.

My heart is shattered. The house will be quieter. There will be an emptiness that can’t be filled. But I would choose every single moment with him all over again, even knowing this day would come.

Thank you, my sweet boy, for every tail wag, every road trip, every move, every cuddle, every laugh, and every memory. Thank you for teaching our children what unconditional love looks like. Thank you for being my constant.

You were never just our dog.

You were family.

I love you more than words will ever be able to say.

Run free, sweet boy. Go run and play with Gizmo. Until we meet again.

It was a fantastic weekend. Filled with Matt’s promotion ceremony, a volleyball tournament, prom, more of the volleyball tournament and celebration of all the activities rolled up into 3 days! So many great memories from this weekend.
