Shoutout to those people past, present, and future. Even if we haven’t spoken in a while I still got love for you through it all. Sending Love and Prosperity in every direction. (3/3) "I had and still have a very nontraditional school experience. I missed and still miss a lot of school, and most times I can’t even be bothered to explain it because it is all so normal to me. Throughout the duration of my academic life I have suffered from a very rare mental health/sleep disorder known as Kleine Levine Syndrome or Sleeping Beauty Disorder. This disease, of unknown etiology, results in episodic cycles of severe sleepiness, appetite and behavior changes, hallucinations, obsessive paranoia, memory loss, personality changes, and other mental imbalances. Episodes occur randomly without warning. Graduating from high school didn’t seem realistic because I spent as much time out of school and in the hospital as I spent in school. Unfortunately, KLS is a very rare condition, so as it pertained to getting leeway from my teachers and administration – didn’t get any of that because they didn’t really understand what was going on. So for that reason the extra effort I would normally put towards trying to excel in classes I had to put towards trying not to drown in classes. I hoped that attending an HBCU would put me in a space where administration would be a little more understanding about my situation. But what I’ve learned is that other people will only be as understanding as you are with yourself and up until a year ago I’ve been pretty nonchalant and in denial about putting up with this disorder. There is no cure. There is no medication and there are no signs of an upcoming episode. I’m thankful to have made it this far but I explain this to say that everyone’s path is a little different and most people aren’t aware of what other people are going through. So instead of placing your own standards and expectations onto other people, empathize with them and they will start to feel comfortable living life on their own terms." #WHYHBCU #MOREHOUSE #HBCU #HBCUPRIDE #morehouse16 #morehouse17 #morehouse18 #morehouse19 #morehouse20

(2/3) "I was accepted by them within two weeks but didn’t really feel a sense of satisfaction because I still, at that point, knew nothing about the school. So after getting various rejections and acceptances I decided to weigh my different options. Morehouse had something called Acceptance Students Day, where all the accepted students would come get a first glimpse into the world and culture that is Morehouse College. My parents, immigrants from Sierra Leone, were pretty disconnected from traditional “black America,” so they thought HBCU’s were a breeding ground for the type of black people that hate diversity. Needless to say this trip was filled with much skepticism from my parents. Not to sound cliché, but when we stepped on to campus we were astounded by the tradition and more importantly by the way that the Men of Morehouse carried themselves. I saw that what they were receiving wasn’t just a great educated, but a strong supportive network, character and leadership development, and a sense of comfort in their community that accepted them for being black men trying contribute to society. It was then that I realized that I needed to be there and begin to tackle all the other issues I had stopping me from getting to there." #WHYHBCU #MOREHOUSE #HBCU #HBCUPRIDE #morehouse16 #morehouse17 #morehouse18 #morehouse19 #morehouse20

(1/3) "Subconsciously I knew I wanted to be in a space that would cater to three things: my network, character and comfort. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the luxury of knowing this is what I wanted out of a college, so rather I adopted the mindset of my peers and shot for going to an Ivy league school. My high school, on the outskirts of Princeton, New Jersey, was a place that prided itself on sending more students to ivies than to our local state school. The type of school to put so much pressure on their students that they would feel like going to a school that isn’t ranked in the top 20 best schools in America is a failure. So obviously it only made sense for me to try and go to one of those schools. I didn’t even know what an HBCU was at the time and surely none of my school’s administration would have recommended one to me because chances are they didn’t know what an HBCU was either. Luckily, I received a scholarship from a local black community group that would only be applicable to me if I chose to attend an HBCU. So step one was finding an HBCU. So like any high school student, I googled “top HBCU’s.” At the time Morehouse was ranked number 2. Plus I saw that Martin Luther King went to Morehouse. So what did I do? I applied to Morehouse." #WhyHBCU #HBCU #MOREHOUSE #AUC #hbcupride #morehouse16 #morehouse17 #morehouse18 #morehouse19 #morehouse20
