Over the coming year, I will be supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL through the Self-taught Designer programme.

While I was still studying furniture making at the Hout- en Meubileringscollege, I got into contact with linoleum. It started with a challenge from Forbo (the manufacturer of linoleum) asking our class to come up with alternative ways of working with their waste material.

After graduating, I was accepted into an art academy, but last minute I decided not to start the programme. Instead, a few opportunities came my way, including access to a studio space at my former job and material support from Forbo, which allowed me to start building my own practice. Looking back, I honestly had no idea where that decision would take me or what the hell I was doing.

Over the years, I built my studio, collected machines, moved from one space to another, and slowly grew into larger spaces within makers community De Hoop.

And in between all of that, I kept making things with linoleum.

Alongside working a regular job and developing my own work with linoleum, I made a whole range of interior and furniture projects. Projects that kept the studio running, paid for new experiments, machines and exhibitions, and gave me the freedom to keep building towards what the studio is today.

This post is a small ode to all of those projects (although not all of them are in this post of course 🥴) and the people behind them. Every single one of them, in one way or another, helped me get to where I am now.

Over the years, I made and collected a lot of ideas, experiments and small material samples in the studio. Things that were often put back on the shelf because there simply wasn't enough time or space to explore them further.

This year I'm giving all of these "shelved ideas" the space they deserve and give myself permission to make freely and follow ideas without immediately knowing where they will lead or the need for it to become a functional object.

Something that feels a little contradictory as a furniture maker "trained" to make functional things.

A big thank you to @stimuleringsfonds for this opportunity ♥️

Keep you posted ;)
